GEORGE K. OSBORN, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
Letters Patent No. 70,252, dated October 29, 1867.
IMPROVED LAMP-B URNER Elge fitlgehnle Ititttth to in time ifrfias jjatent at making and at flpz same.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, GEORGE K. OSBORN, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented a new and improved Lamp-Burner; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use th being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
This invention relates to a new and useful improvement in lamp-burners of that class which is designed for burning coal oil and other hydrocarbons which require a large amount of oxygen in order to support proper combustion for illuminating purposes. The invention consists in the application of a, jacket to the upper part of the wick-tube, constructed and arrangedin sucha manner that a current of air is supplied to the base of the flame all around the top of the wick, as hereinafter fully shown and described. In the accompanying sheet of drawings--- e same, reference Figure 1 is a vertical seotion of a lamp-burner having my improvement applied to it, xx, fig. 2, indicating the line'of section.
Figure 2, a plan or top view of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
A represents the wick-tube of a lamp-burner, and B a jacket which is fitted over the same, said jacket extending 'up through a wire-cloth disk, C, in the burner, and having the part a above said disk corrugated in zigzag form vertically, so as to produce a series of air-tubes, b, all around the wick. The lower part c of the jacket belowthe disk 0 is rather larger in diameter than the upper part a, and the wick-tube A extends up into B to about the height of 0, but the wick is turned up to a level or a trifle above the upper end of B. Theloiver part of the burner below the disk C is open so that air may pass freely into the lower end of thejacket, while the upper corrugated part a of the jacket conducts the air directly to the base of the flame. The wire-cloth disk 0 causes an even supply of air to the flame above the jacket B, the usual glass draught-chimney being employed.
This invention has been practically tested, and has been i'cund to answe to burn with a white light like that from a gasjet, no offensive smell or odor being emitted.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The construction and arrangement of the tube B, surrounded by the perforated disk C, the upper part b corrugated, and of less diameter than the lower part c, all supported at their points of connection by the short tube A, as and for the purpose specified.
GEORGE K. OSBORN.
