PUZZLE.

SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 702,284, dated June 1902- Application filed April 15,1902.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, MARTIN CODY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Puzzle, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved puzzle in which a cord or other flexible tie is required by a person to be several times woundaround a rod against an abutting device and a removable retainer in such a manner that when the retainer is removed the tie on being pulled is completely released from the rod, the arrangement of the rod, abutting device, and removable re tainer being such that if the tie is not properly tied by the person it is held fast by the rod on removing the retainer, and the puzzle is consequently not solved.

The inventiouconsists of novel features and parts and combinations of the same, as will be more fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claims.

A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improvement, showing a stepin the proceedings in solving thepuzzle. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same, showing another step in the proceedings in solving the puzzle; and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the same, showing the final result when properly solving the puzzle. 4

In the improved puzzle use is made "of a flexible tie A, such as a cord or the like, and of a rod B, preferably secured on the connected standards C0 of a portable frame adapted to be set on a table or other suitable support. The rod B is provided on top, a distance from the standard 0, with an abutting device D in the form of p a short lug, against which is abutted the loop A, formed by the Serial No. 102,950. (No model.)

On the rod B, a distance from the retaining device D and between the latter and the standard 0, is arranged an aperture B, in which is removably held a retainer E, preferably in the form of a pin or peg rising from the top of the rod, the same as the abutting device D. Now the object of the puzzle is to wind the flexible tie A around the rod B several times, with the loop A against the retaining device D and the strands of the tie engaging opposite sides of the retainer E, so that when the ends of the tie are finally pulled and the retainer E is removed then the tie is completely freed from the rod B. Now it is evident that if the strands of the tie A are not passed around the rod B in the proper sequence then it will be found that the tie remains tied to the rod on removing the retainer E. By reference to the drawings it will be seen that after the loop A is engaged with the abutting device D one of the strands is kept at all times close to the rod B, while the other strand crosses the first strand, and this is essential in order to remove the tie from the rod B after the retainer E is removed from the rod.

The device is very simple and durable in construction, and in trying to solve the puzzle considerable amusement is afforded to the performer as well as to the onlookers.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A puzzle in which a flexible tie is employed, comprising a rod, a fixed abutting device on the rod for engagement by a loop on the flexible tie, and a retainer removably held on the rod, a distance from the abutting device, and likewise adapted to be engaged by the said tie, as set forth.
