APPARATUS FOR COPYING DOCUMENTS, DRAWINGS, 80G.-

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ERNEST SINCLAIR, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at 62 Aldermanbury, in the city of-London, England, have invented a new and useful Improvement in and Relating to Apparatus for Copying Documents, Drawin gs, and the Like, (for which I have applied for Letters Patent in Great Britain, numberedl,562, and beariug date the 4th day of March, 1901,) of which the following is a full and complete specification.

This invention relates to an improved printing-frame for carrying the stencil-sheet for producing copies of documents, drawings, and the like; and it consists, essentially, of a bedpiece and of a frame for carrying the stencil. The frame is connected to the bed by means of one or more, preferably two, pairs of arms or links, one or more of which are controlled by a rat-trap or other suitable form of spring operating to raise the frame from the bed, the arrangements of the arms or links being such that the frame rises more rapidly and to a greater extent at the back than at the front, so that when it is brought to a state of rest by one or more of the arms or links coming into contact with an elastic buffer or stop the frame lies at an angle with the bed, the front part being nearest thereto.

In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate one form my invention may assume, Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of an apparatus constructed according to this invention, and Fig. 2 is a view in plan thereof.

Throughout both views similar parts are marked with like letters of reference.

The frame A, adapted to carry the stencilsheet, is connected to the bed B by means of two pairs of arms or links 0 C. These arms or links arepreferably formed to engage the frame A in such a manner as to be easily detached therefrom in order to readily insert or remove the stencil-sheet. When the arms or links 0 O are permanently attached to the frame, I prefer to carry the stencil-sheet in an auxiliary frame fitting in and carried by the frame A.

,The arms 0' are preferably connected together beneath the bed B, as shown, and a lever 0, formed on or in the connecting por tion of said arms or links, is attached to one end of an adjustable spring 0 the free end of which is carried by the bed 13, so that the arms or links are controlled by said spring, which operates to raise the frame A from the bed into the position shown in dotted lines on Fig. 1.

The arms or links C C are of such a length and are so arranged that the frame A rises more rapidly and to a greater extent at the back than at the front, so that when it is brought to a state of rest by one or more of the arms or levers coming into contact with an elastic buffer or stop I) on thebed B the frame A lies at an angle with the bed, as shown in dotted lines.

Any suitable form of catch 6 may be employed to fasten the frame A down to the bed when necessary.

For use the apparatus is preferably placed Within the bottom part X of a box adapted to inclose it when not being used.

In operation the frame A is brought down to the bed B to bring the stencil-sheet into contact with the sheet of paper placed on the bed B to receive the copy by the one hand, while the inking-roller or squeegee is applied with the other. The frame is then released and rises automatically, carrying the copied or stenciled sheet with it for a certain distance, when the said sheet may be removed, or it will automatically fall away into the lid X of the box, when the same is arranged as shown in dot-and-dash line on Fig. 1. A fresh sheet of paper is then placed on the bed B and the frame A again operated.

WVhat I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. An apparatus for copying documents drawings and the like comprising a frame carrying the stencil-sheet a bed on which the paper to receive the impression is laid, and two pairs of links connecting the frame with the bed, the pairs being of unequal effective length in order to cause the one end of the frame to rise more rapidly and to a greater extent than the other end thereof, as set forth.
