NECKBAND-SHAPER..
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 701,181, dated May 27, 1902.

T0 at whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, MANGOLD H. ELLEN- BOGEN and ABRAM L. LEVI, citizens of the United States, and residents of Paterson, in the county of Passaic and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Neckband-Shaper, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to the laundering of shirts; and its object is to provide a new and improved neckbandshaper which is simple and durable in construction and readily adjustable to diiferent-sized neckbands and conveniently applied to the neckbands to hold the same in proper position during the ironing of the shirt-yoke to insure propersetting of the neckband and uniformity in the shape of the neckbands.
The invention consists of novel features and parts and combinations of the same, as
V will be more fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claims.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings,
forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a perspective View of the improvement. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation'of the same, and Fig. 3 is a transverse section of the Same.
The neckband-shaper consists, essentially, of the members A and B, preferably made of spring sheet-metal bands and formed with curved front portions A and B and straight back portions A B as plainly indicated in Fig. 1. The front portions A B overlap each other, and on the free end of the outer portion B is secured a loop 0, through which extends loosely the other portion A. of the portion 13 is secured a bolt D, extending inwardly through an elongated slot A formed in the free end of the portion A, and on the said bolt D screws a nut D, adapted to engage the inner face of the portion A, the said bolt and nut forming a means for securely fastening the front portions A and B of the members A and B together after the said members are adjusted to conform to the size of the neckband on which the shapcr is to be used.
On the inside- Inorder to permit proper and accurate adjustment of the members A and B according to the size of the neckband, the inner face of the front portion B is provided with a linear graduation E, on which slides the end edge of the portion A, said end edge indicating upon the graduation the size of the neckband that will fit the shaper, it being understood that when the said edge stands at 17.2 the shaper is set for a neckband of seventeen and one-half inches in length. The corners A B of the members A and B are preferably rounded off to set the back portions A and B somewhat inwardly, as plainly shown in Fig. 1, so that the rear end of the neckband stretches from one corner to the other with out touching the back portions A B 1 The rear or back portions A and B are provided at their overlapping ends with rigidly-attached loops F and F, normally abutting one againstthe other, of which the loop.F forms a guideway for the portion B and the other loop F forms a similar guideway for the portion A". Now when the shaper has been set to the size of the neckband and it is desired to place the shaper in position on the inner face of the neckband, then the operator presses the members toward each other at the rear ends, so that the straight back portions A and B slide one over the'other to reduce the size of the shaper, and thereby allow its convenient insertion in the neckband. When this has been done, the operator releases the members from pressure and the members consequently open up, owing to their resiliency, until the loops F F again abut one against the other. The neckband is now tightly stretched over the shaper.
In defining our invention with greater clearness we would state that the distinctive features are two main members, each of which comprehends a portion of the chord of a circle and a portion of the arc, the'chord-sections having a slidable connection with each other and the arc portions having also'a slidable connection with each other, and one of said connections having means for rigidly looking it, and also graduations on one of the connecting parts and the other connection being free to slide, and the are portions being also made as springs to permit a further in-' ward yielding of the chord-sections to permit compression for insertion into the neckband.
In practice the shaper is inserted in the neckband after the latter is ironed and previous to ironing the yoke or other parts adjacent to the neckband. Now by the use of the shaper the neckband is set to the shape construction, is not liable to get out of order,
and can be easily manipulated and adjusted in the manner above described and for the purpose set forth.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. Aneckband-shapercomprising two separate members, each of which has one portion bent to form the chord of an arc and the other portion the circumference of the arc, the
chord portions of the members being slidably connected and the arc portion being also slidably" connected, and means for rigidly locking one of their sliding connections while the other remains yielding, substantially as and for the purposes described.

Aneckband shapercomprisingtwoseparate members, each of which'has'one portion bent to form the chord of an arc and the other portion the circumference of the arc, the chord portions having each a rigidly-attached terminal keeper with the keeper of each chord-section embracing the body part of the opposite member, and a locking device for the sliding curved portions of the members, substantially as described.
3. Aneckband-shaper comprising two separate members, each of which has one portion bent to form the chord of an arc and the other portion the circumference of the arc, and having also at the bend of these two portions a rearwardly-extending offset A and B sliding connections for the chord portions, sliding connections for the arc portions, and means for locking one of said sliding connections to a rigid adjustment substantially as shown and described.
4.- A neckband-shaper comprising two members united to form a curved front and a straight back, the members having their back portions slidably connected and the front portions overlapping for adjustable attachment one to the other, and means for securing the front portions together, after the same have been adjusted, as set forth.
