CLASP.
Application filed February 12, 1913.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NORMA F. Scnxruss, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Clasp, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a. new and improved clasp more especially designed for use on hose supporters and like devices and arranged to securely grip hose or other fabric material without danger of tearing it.
In order to accomplish the desired result use is made of a plate having spaced bearings and coacting clamping members for clamping the fabric material between them, one of the clamping members having long side arms and the other clamping member having short side arms, the side arms of both clamping members terminating in pivots engaging the said spaced bearings to allow of swinging the clamping members independently one of the other into clamping or into open position, the clamping member having the short side arms being adapted to pass between the long side arms of the other clamping member and to the front thereof to overlie this clamping member.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the clasp; Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the same on the line 22 of Fig. l, and showing the fabric material engaged by the clamping members; Fig. 3 is a cross section of the clasp with the clamping members in open position; Fig. A is a front elevation of two connected clasps attached to a hose; Fig. 5 is a front elevation of the clasp provided with a supporting loop for single attachment to a hose; and Fig. 6 is a similar view of the clasp attached to a supporting tape.
A plate A of sheet metal or other suitable material is provided at its upper end with a bearing C and at the lower end with a bearing D. The bearing C is engaged by pivots E extending inwardly from long side arms E connected with each otherat their free ends by a clamping member E co-act Specification of Letters Patent.

The clamping member F is of a length to readily pass between the side arms E of the other clamping member E and the side arms F are bent downwardly, outwardly, inwardly and upwardly to form stops F adapted to abut against.
the back of the side arms E to limit the forward swinging movement of the clamping member F when passing the latter between the side arms E (see Fig. 3). The upper ends of the side arms F are provided with cam faces F adapted to engage in side arms E with a view to forcing the same outwardly to allow the plate A to swing forwardly turning on the pivots E as a fulcrum so that the plate A moves into locked position relative to the clamping members E and F at the time the said clamping members clamp 'the material G between them, as indicated in Fig.'2. It will be noticed that when the parts are in this position the pivots F extend forward of a straight line passing through the pivots E and the clamping member F so that the several parts are held in locked position at the time the material G is clamped between the clamping members E and F. It is understood that by making the arms F shorter than the side arms E and providing separate bearings for the said arms to swing on it is evident that the clamping member F can be readily passed between the side arms E, as previously explained and indicated in Fig. 3. i
In practice, two such clasps are preferably used on each hose at opposite sides thereof, as plainly indicated in Fig. 4:, and in order to connect the clasps with the top of a hose supporter the following arrangement-is made: Pivotally mounted on the right-hand pivot E of a clasp adjacent the plate A is a socket H in which is secured one end of an elastic or other cord 1 passing through an eye J pivoted on the left hand pivot E of this clasp, it being understood that the cord T passes through the eye 5 on the other clasp, and has this end attached to the corresponding socket H; thus by the arrangement described a loop is provided on each clasp between the socket H and the corresponding eye J for engagement rith an attaching member of a hose supporter, and the cord 1 extends over the knee portion and additional attaching members can be connected with the cord intermediate the buckles, as indicated in Fig. 4. By the arrangement described an even pull is exerted on the clasps, and as the clamping members E and F grip a large portion of the fabric material G, it is evident that the hose is securely gripped and the danger of tearing is reduced to a minimum. For single attachment of a clasp to hose (see Fig. 5), the pivots E are both pivoted in socket members H, and in the said socket members are secured the ends of a cord 1 of elastic or non-elastic material. The sockets H and J are each formed of a flat strip of metal bent at each end in an eye or socket, one of which receives the pivot E and the other the elastic cord 1.
The clasp may be directly attached to a strap or tape K of a hose supporter, and for this purpose use is made of a loop L attached to the plate at the upper end thereof to receive the tape K, as plainly indicated in Fig. 6.
In usin the clasp the clamping members E and F are swung into open position (see Fig. 3) and then the fabric material is drawn over the clamping member F from the rear to the front thereof, after which the clamping member 13 is swung forward between the side arms E with a view to move the clamping member l5 to the front of the clamping member E The user now exerts a forward pressure on the plate A to swing the same forward, the plate turning on the pivots E as the fulcrum. On swinging the plate A forward the pivots F of the side arms F are likewise moved forward so that the stops F finally abut against between the clamping members E and .F;
When it is desired to open the clasp. with a view to release the fabric ,matsrralc-Gthe user presses rearwardly on the lower porition of the plate A to force the cam faces F back to the rear of the yielding side arms E and to draw the clamping member F upward away from the clamping member E to permit of finally swinging the clamping member F rearwardly to completely release the fabric material.
The clasp shown and described is very simple and durable in construction and composed of comparatively few parts, which can. be readily manipulated to se curely grip the-hose or other fabric material, or to release the same whenever it is desired to do so by opening the clasp and correspondingly pressing the plate A.
Having thus described my inventiom'l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent: r
l. A. clasp,-comprising a plate having bearings at its upper and lower ends,a clamping member having its side members bent inwardly to form pintles engaging the bearing at the upper end of the plate, a second clamping member having its side members bent inwardly to form pintles engaging the bearing at the lower end of the plate, the said side members being also bent clownwardly, outwardly, inwardly and upwardly to form a laterally projecting stop on each side member for engaging the lower faces of the side members of the first clamping member, and a loop pivotally mounted with respect to the plate.
2. A clasp, comprising a plate having bearings at opposite edges and co-acting clamping members for clamping a fabric material between them, one of the said clamping members having long side arms and the other clamping member having short side arms, the side arms of both clamping members terminating in inwardly extendingpivots engaging the said bearings to allow of swin in the clam in members independently one of the other into clamping or into open position, the clamping member having short side arms being adapted to pass between the long side arms of the other clamping member and to the front thereof and to overlie this clamping member, the said short side arms having outwardly-extending stops adapted to abut against the long side arms at the rear there'- of, and the short side arms having outwardly-extending cam faces between the stops and the pivots to engage the long side arms and bend the same outward.
