BOOK-COVER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 701,055, dated May 27, 1902.
Application filed November 13,1901. Serial No. 82,118. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, FRANCIS CHARLES GEORGE KNIBB, of New Southgate, London, N., and THOMAS RICHARD TOWLER, of Woodford, county of Essex, England, subjects of the King of Great Britain, have invented a new and Improved Book-Cover, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact descrip tion.
This invention relates to improvements in the construction of book-covers, particularly covers of yielding material, such as on books designed to be carried in the pocket; and the object is to provide means in connection with such cover to render it stronger at the edges than is the usual cover.
We will describe a book-cover embodying our invention and then point out the novel features in the appended claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure 1 is a plan view of a cover-section embodying our invention with parts broken away to more clearly show the other parts,
and Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, 5 designates the body portion, consisting of pasteboard or other suitable flexible material and on one side of which is secured the outer covering material 6, consisting of leather or the like, anditmay also have an inner cover 7,0f leather, paper, cloth, or othersuitable material. Extended around the edge of the body 5 is a cord 8, and to hold .the said cord in place the edges of the cover material 6 are extended beyond the body 5, so as to lap over against the inner side thereof, as clearlylshown in the drawings, and this lapped portion is of course secured to the body 5 by a suitable adhesive. The portion overlapping the cord 8 may be pressed closely against the cord by any suitable means, so as to present a good finish. After said lapping over and fastening of the edge or edges of theouter cover material the inner lining 7 may be glued to the inner surface of the body 5. It is to be understood, however, that this inner lining 7 may be omitted without departing from the spirit of our invention.
In employing the term cord we include cords of any suitable material, such as cotton cord, linen thread, hemp, &c.
Having thus described our invention, We claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A book-cover comprising a body of flexible material, a cord extended around and against the edges thereof, an outer cover material secured to the outer surface of the body and having its extended edges turned over the cord and secured to the opposite surface of the body, thus holding the cord in place, and an inner cover material secured to said inner surface of the body and engaging with the overturned or overlapped portion, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof we have signed our names to this specificationin the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
FRANCIS CHARLES GEORGE KNIBB. THOMAS RICHARD 'lOWLlllt.
