ATENT OFFICE.
JOHN GILSON, OF PORT \VASIIINGTON, WISCONSIN.
GRINDING- MACHINE.
SPEGIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 701,031, dated May 27, 1902. Application filed September 20, 1901. Serial No. 75.914. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN GILSON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Port Washington, in the county of Ozaukee and State of WV isconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Grinding-Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof. My invention has for its object to improve the detail of that species of grinding-machines.
set forth in Patent No. 655,753, of August 14, 1900, as especially designed for agriculturists, said invention consisting in what is hereinafter particularly specified with reference to the accompanying drawings and subsequently claimed.
Figure 1 of the drawings represents an elevation of the improved machine, partly in section, lengthwise thereof; Fig. 2, a plan view of a portion of the machine-base and vertically-adj ustable incline-plane brackets therewith, these brackets being a feature of the improvements; Fig. 3, a detail sectional elevation illustrating one of said brackets in connection with the base and supporting the reciprocative grinding-device carrier of the machine; Fig. 4, a detail partly-sectional View indicated by line t a in the first figure; and Fig. 5, a detail perspective View illustrating the lower portion of a carrier-support having detachable connection with said base, this support and a base-rib engageable therewith being another feature of. the improvements.
Referring by letter to the drawings, A indicates the cast-metal base of the improved machine, provided with the usual lugs b and rests c thereon for abutment of a sickle-bar and knife-sections of the same, this base, standard-yoke B, rocker-yoke O, grindingdevice carrier D, clamp-jaw E, and means for tightening said jaw being similar in general construction and arrangement to like parts set forth in the aforesaid patent, any improvements being means for automatic lift of said carrier at the finish of stroke in either direction of its reciprocation and for holding the aforesaid carrier in stationary elevated position when desirable.
In accordance with my improvements the base A is provided with a pair of parallel vertically-slotted and flanged standards F, that constitute guides for depending apertured shanks d of converging incline planes G, bolts 6 engaging the standard-slots, shank-apertures, and nuts f to hold the brackets comprising said planes and their shanks in vertically-adjusted position. The incline-plane brackets are in the patl of a journal-bearing g,constituting part of carrierD, when the machine is being used for grinding knife-sections of sickle-bars, the grinding device l-l being best shown in Fig 3. By means of the incline plane brackets the carrier and grinding device H therewith are automatically lifted at the finish of stroke on the part of said carrier in either direction of its reciprocation, whereby overgrinding of the sickle-barknifesections is prevented, independent vertical adjustment of said bracket-s being in proportion to the length of said knife-sections.
At the side of the machine farthest from standards F and on a line between these standards the base A is provided with an upright transverse rib I, the upper outer end of which is vertically extended in the form of a lug h, and this rib is designed to fit a vertical center recess in the lower end of a'support 'J, that of itself is provided with inner lower end lugs 2, these lugs being caught under a lateral flange j of said base when the support is placed on said rib, abutting the lug h of same. The upper. portion of the support J is pr0- vided Witha seat for a lateral stud 7c of the carrier Dand is preferably made with an angular recess, whereby said support may have the function of a wrench when detached from the 1nachine.- p
When positioned in connection with the base and grinding-device carrier of the machine, the support J serves to hold said carrier stationary at a suitable elevation clear of the sickle-bar clamp and converging inclined planes G whenever necessary or desirablesay, for instance, when said inclined planes are being adjusted. However, the
support herein set forth is novel onlyin the peculiar construction of its lower endand in combination withthe rib I and flange j of the machine-base, said support being a detachable appendage of the machine held in working position independent of the clamp-jaw specified.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. A grinding-machine of the species described having the clamp end of its base provided with an inclined plane in the path of the reciprocative grinding-device carrier of the machine.
2. A grinding-machine of the species described having the clamp end of its base provided with inclined planes arranged in the path of the reciprocative grinding-device carrier of the machine to automatically lift the same when on stroke in either direction of its travel.
3. A grinding-machine of the species described having the clamp end of its base provided with standards, and converging incline-plane brackets vertically adjustable on the standards in the path of a portion of the reciprocative grinding-device carrier of the machine.
4. A grinding-machine of the species described having the clamp end of its base pro-,
vided with verticallyslotted and flanged standards, converging incline planes having depending apertured shanks engaging the standards, bolts extendin g through the standard-slots and shank-apertures, and nuts run on the bolts, said planes being in the path of a portion of the reciprocative grinding-device carrier of the machine.
5. A grinding-machine of the species described having the clamp end of its base provided with a lateral flange and an upright scribed provided with an attachment in the form of a support having an upper end seat for a lateral lug on the grinding-device carrier of the machine, a lower recess for the engagement of a base-rib of said machine inside an upper lug extension of the same, and lower end lugs that extend under a lateral base-flange of the aforesaid machine when said engagement is effected, said support in working position serving to hold the carrier and grinding device of the machine in stationary elevated position.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand, at Port Washington, in the county of Ozaukee and State of Visconsin, in the presence of two witnesses.
JOHN GILSON.
