Description

M. B. FOOTE, OF NEW ENGLAND VILLAGE,l MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND E.,N. FOUTE-OF .THE SAME PLAGE.
Letters Patent No. 70,081, dated October 22, 1867.
IMPROVEMENT IN (lOMBINED KNOB-LATCH AND LOCK.
TO ALL WI'IOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, MONROE B. FOOTE, of New England Village, in the county of Worcester, and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new'and improved Combined Lock and Latch; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description ofthe same,refe1"encc being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part oi this specification, and in whichi i Figure 1 is a longitudinal section through the centre of my combined lock and latch.
Figure 2 is a vertical section through the centre of the same, showing particularly the opera-tion' of thelock.
Figure 3 is a side Velevation of the whole instrument. y
Similar letters of reference' indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
This invention consists in combining the common spring door-latch with a lock situated inside ofthe latchcase in a slot in the latch-bolt, .into one side of which its bolt locks.
The case which contains the-mechanism of this combined lock and latch is in the form ota round cylinder or barrel, about four inches in length and one inch or less in diameter, so that it can readily be inserted into an auger-hole bored forthe purpose in the edge of the door. At the extremity through which the latch-bolt operates the case is attached to a plate which is designed to be screwed to the edge of the door.
In the drawings, A represents the barrel of the latch containing the various parts of the mechanism hereinafterdescribed. B is the latch-bolt sliding longitudinally in the barael A, its bevelled extremity projecting from the end of the barrel, and its opposite extremity connected by a chain, C, with the hub or roller which bears the door-knob. A wide slot is cut in the latch-bolt, extending nearly its entire length. In this slot is placed a small lock, D, which is firmly attached to the barrel A by `pins or bolts or any other suitable means. A spiral spring, E, is also placed in the slot, one end of which hears against the fixed lock D, and the other against the wall'iwthelatch at th'eui'rlont'extremity of the slot. The latch-bolt thus constructed slides freely back and forth pastthc iiired lock D when the latter is unlocked. In the inner side of the latch-holt Bvin the wall of the slot, and directlyin front of the bolt F of the lock., is a mortise into which the bolt F entersivhen the door is locked, preventing. thev bolt B from moving in any directionf. The parts of the fixed lock D are clearly shown in iig. 2, in which G is the key, His the tumbler, and F the bolt.
I do not desire to limit myself to this particular way of constructing the inside mechanism of the lock D, but may use any form of lock-that will suit the purpose. The construction shown in the drawings, however, admits of close packing, which is essential where thelock is confined in so small a space, and-at the same timeA can be made very strong, and will not be liable to get out of order.
Theopveration of a combined lock and latch thus constructed is very simple, convenient, and perfect. To
attach the instrumentto the door no mortising is required, but a simple auger-hole, deep enough to receive the. I
0 entire length of the barrel A-is all that is needed. A couple of screws through the plate K secure the instrument firmly in its place in the door, and it is then lready for use. The latch, being a spring-latch, closes, of course, by the force of the closing door. It is then opened by turning the door-knob'L in any' directiomV If it is desired to lock the door, a turn of 4the key G fixes the latch-bolt firmly to the immovable lock D, and
renders 'it impossible to open the door. a
Instead of the spiral spring E, any other form of spring may be used that will answer as well. The chain C I make with swivel-joints connecting the links, a form which gives it greater strength with less liability to rfoul. The barrelA may be made in several 'pieces if desired. In my drawings the sides of it are shown as made in two pieces, or being divided longitudinally into two equal sections, these sections attached to each other and to the fixed lock D by screws, and having notches fitting upon projections in the plate K and the 'end piece on the opposite end of the barrel, to hold the sections of the side pieces ot' the barrel4 more firmly. 'y
Having thusldescribed my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to'sccure by LettersrPatent, is; The latch-bolt B, 'having the wide slot herein described, and having in one of the walls of that slot a mortise to receive the bolt ofy the lock D, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
