JOHN SOANLAN, OF OHIOAGO,I'LL1NOIS. i Letters Patent No. 70,030, dated October 22, 1867; antedated October 16,1867.
IMPROVBD FELT-ROOFING.
'.lO ALL WHO 1T MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, JOHN SCANLAN, of Chicago, in the county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful improvement in Felt-Roofing; and I do hereby declare and make known that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the saule, reference being had tothe accompanying drawings, and the letters and figures marked thereon, which form part of this specification.
Tose'nable those skilled in the art to understand howto construct and use my invention I will proceed to describe the same with particularity, making reference, in so doing, to the aforesaid drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a plan view of my inventiouas applied upon a root', and
Figure?. is a sectional view of one of the strips of roofing. l
Similar letters of reference in the drawings denote in the diiferent figures the same parts Ofmy invention.'
A A represent the laye-rs of this roofing as arranged upon 4a. roof, the laps hereinafter specied being indicated at a b c, in fig. 1, the stripsV being arranged across the roof, each successive layer overlapping the edge of the preceding layer or strip, similar in manner to the overlapping ot' one row or course of shingles upon another. The roofing consists ot three layers or strataof saturated felt, each layer being saturated with coal tar and coated with a composition of .water-proong; or some of said layers may bc coated with water-proofing and]A Others simply be saturated with coal tar. The cent-ral layor should always be coated with a water-proofing composition. These layers, having been thus prepared, are arranged one upon'the other, in strips of any desired length or width, and extend laterally one over the other, as clearly seen in iig. 2, which represents a crosssection of said strip, when the whole is passed through between suitable pressing-rollers, and compactly and firmly pressed together, forming one heavy strip of the lroofing, which -may bc formed into rolls for storage or transportation, ready for use. The system of the overlapping of the several strata is for thepurpose of' making the overlapping edges of the manufactured strips thin, so that 4in laying them upon the root the laps do not form ridges or channels across the roo-f toretain the water or rain.
I claim, as a new article of man uf'aeture-ii Roofing material manufactured in strips-and composed-of three layers of saturated felt, arranged as and for the purposes specified.
JOHN SCANLAN.
