Specification forming part of Letters `Patent No. 57,080, dated August 14, 1866; antedated August 3, 1866.

Beit known that I, ALBERI BRISBANE, of
the city and State oflNew York, have invented and made a certain new and useful Improvement in Roofs and Weather-Boarding 5 and I do hereby declare the following to be a full7 clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, mak-l ing part of this specification, wherein- Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my said improved roofing, and Fig. 2 represents a modification of the same.
The same parts are denoted by similar letters.
The object of my invention is to produce a cheap and strong roof of wood that will be more durable than shingles and less liable to get out of order, and that may be laid at a less inclination.
The nature of my said invention consists in boards bent into a curved or trough shape and secured to concave rafters or bearers, the separate lengths of boards being lapped at the points" of intersection and the joints being covered.
By this device the roof or weather-boarding of the boards may be left in a rough or scored state by the tool that cuts them up, so that the said coating material may adhere strongly. The boards a are to be laid on concave, or notched bearers b adapted to fit the under side of said boards. and the boards are to be laid in` ranges with their ends lapping upon each other, either the entire thickness, or. the ends of the boards may be thinned'or undercut, so as to lap and not form so great 'an offset.
The edges of the boards are to be sufficient] y beveled to set closely together, and are tol be covered with a groove or V-shaped ridge strip, c or, if preferred, the boards may be laid alternately with a convex and concave side outward, as seen in Fig. 2, the edges lapping sufciently to make tight joints.
The boards may be grooved longitudinally in any convenient manner, on either or both sides, to facilitate bending the board, particularly when thick. If this is done on the concave side, the groove should be wedge-shaped, so as to be closed in the act of bending.
