IMPROVEMENT IN FELT ROOFING.

TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:

Be it known that I, JOHN SCANLAN, of Chicago, in the county of Cook, and State of Illinois,.have invented a new and useful Improvement in Felt Roofing; and I do hereby declare and make known that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and the letters and figures marked thereon, which form part ofthis specification.

My invention consists in a novel and peculiar arrangement of canvas, and layers of felt or its equivalent, whereby an article of roong is produced greatly-superior in point of `strength and durability to any of the kinds of roofing of the same class which have yet been produced. i l

Toenable those skilled in the art to understand how to construct and use my invention, I Will proceed to describe the samewith particularity, making reference in so doing to the aforesaid drawings, in which- Figure I represents a plan view of my invention, as applied upon the roof.

Figure 2 is a transverse sectional view of the same; and

Figure 3 is a transverse section of one ofthe strips ofthe article as it comes from the manufactory.

A B C represent the layers of the rooting, `when arranged upon a roof; the material being manufactured in strips, and applied as shown, extending across the roof, and corresponding with the layers of shingles upon a shingled roof.

Each layer or strip of the rooting is made in the following manner, and composed of the following described material: The lower stratum consists of a layer of' dry felt, a, which is intended to lie in Contact with the boards of the roof, being used dry, so as to prevent its adhering thereto, which, in such case, would, by the shrinkage ofthe boards, have the effect to crack and injure the rooting, and cause it to leak. The next stratum is composed of canvas or cloth, marked Ab, which is first shrunk and saturated with coal tar, or its equivalent, to prevent `the manufactured article from wrinkling or curling up, and also `to preserve the same. Upon the canvas is laid a layer of felt, e, which has been saturated in coal tar, or its equivalent, and then coated with or passed through a meltedV water-proofing composition the first being for n. preservative, and the second to exclude the rain, and water from melted snow. Upon this layer is placed another layer of felt, saturated in coal tar, when the whole is passed through suitable pressing-rollersZ which press the same irmlytogether, forming rolls thereof, of any desired length or width, ready for transportation. Theldiifercnt strata composing this roofing are of varied lengths, thus providing for the overlapping of one layer upon the other, as shown, when arranged in the manner' shown in the drawings. This rooting can readily be applied by any one, by arranging the layers as specified, and securing them to the roof in any suitable manner. After this roofing has been arranged upon the roof, the ordinary gravel coating may be put on, or not, as desired.

'Having described the manner of making and applying or using my invention, I will now specify what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent:

I claim, as a new article of manufacture, the rooting composed of the materials, and arranged as herein specified.
