Description

- which will hereinafter befully described, anding the locking devices loosened to permit U ITED I STATES;
PATENT .Q FI
ALBERT AfKELLOGG, or CLINTON, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO GUSTAVE. c. HAYSLER, on CLINTON, MISSOURI:
END'GATEIFAISTENE'RJ sr' crnIcATIoIv. forming part of Letters lfatent'No. 700,14 dated Iifay 13, 1902. d l Application filed March 14,1902. ser nnoreazoo. de and To all'whom'it. lrtay'concern: Be it knownthat IfAL BERT A. KELLOGG,
residing at Clinton, in the county. of Henry, and State of Missouri,-have invented certain new and useful Improvements in End-Gate Fasteners, of which the following is a specification. 1 i
My invention relates to that type of endgate fasteners in which locking means, including a rod or bar adapted to extend transversely over the end-gate, and" devices connected to the Wagon-body forcooperating with the opposite ends of said bar or rod for effecting a pull strain on the opposite sides against the ends of the end-gate; and my said invention primarily seeks-to provide a very simple, economical, and easily-manipulated end gate fastener means of the character noted capable of beingreadilyapplied to its looking or unlocking position without the necessity of unscrewing nu ts, bolts; &c.,and' which will effectively serve for its intended purposes.
In its generic nature my invention comprehends a novel construction of hinge member for engaging with the outer end of one of the wagon sides, a bar or rod, one end of I which is adapted to connect'with thehinge-bar, and a special construction'of'lock devices for engaging the other end of the said bar, the severalparts having a peculiar correlative arrangement and combination of parts, all of specifically pointed out in the appended claims, reference being hadjto the accompanying drawings, in which-' Figure 1 is a perspective view of a portion of a wagon-body equipped with my improved end-gate fastener,.-the end-gate being shown fastened. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section of the same, the fastener devices being shown unlockedto permit ofthe removal of the end: gate. Fig. 3 is'a perspective view illustratthe gate member being raised. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the lock-bar holding or clamping means hereinafter referred to.
In the accompanying drawings, in which like characters indicate like parts in all of the .y be of any approved construction, and 2 gures, 1 designates the wagon-body, which I the end-gate, preferablymadeof plain boards,
having the usual bracing cleats 2 2, as shown. 7 At oneside the wagon body has the usualpair of vertical cleats lor guides 3 3 to 5 5 receive one end of the end-gate 2, and at the opposite side the vertical or side portion 1- of the wagon-body terminatesin a plane with the outer surfaces of the end-gate 2 when the same is adjusted to an operative position, and 6c the said side 1 has a single bearing-cleat &
to =receive the end 2 ofjthe end-gate 2, as clearly shown in Fig. 1. Upon the outer end I of the side member 1 is hinged a swinging cleat 6, preferably a wooden member, secured to the member 1 by the'jstrap-hinges 5 and in (spich manner as to close flatwise over the en of the wagon portion; 1 1 and to lie in a plane with the cleats-29 0f the end-gate. (See Fig. l.) The member 6 isof such length that its inner end 6 willproject beyond the innerfed gel of I the wagon-body portion 1, and the said'projecting portion 6 forms, as
it were, a cleat portion for cooperating with the cleat 4 to form'a proper guide for the end -2 of the end gate 2.
' So far'as described it will be noticed that when the hinged cleat 6 is swung outward to the position shown in Fig. 2 the end-gate 2 can be readily detached'from the wagon-body by swinging it outward in a horizontal plane, as
indicatedby the arrow at in Fig. 2, and it can be likewise fitted inposition andsecurely held in place by turning the hinge member 6 over to the position shown in Fig. 1 and locking the same to said position. As a simple and inexpensive means for holding the hinged member 6 to its closed position I provide the same with an eye or hook'6 adapted to receive the hook end 7 a of a locking=rod 7, adapt- 0 I the adjacent cleat 3 are slotted horizontally, as indicated by 00, to receive the lock-engaging end of the rod 7. By providing the slot 9: and arranging the rod 7 to cooperate therewith in the manner shown and described when drawn to its locked position the said rod 7 will be caused to lie snugly against the cleats 2 of the end-gate, and thereby hold the said gate firmly pressed against the inner cleats 3 and 4 from rattling and from accidental displacement.
By providing a locking member having a crank portion 8 joined to the end 7 of the rod 7 it is manifest that when the crank-shaft S is adjusted to the position shown in Figs. 1 and 4 the pull strain on the rod 7 will serve to maintain the locking device 8 to its adjusted and locked position. Furthermore, by connecting the rod 7 with the hinged cleat 6 and with the locking device 8, as stated, the said rod 7 and the hinged cleat 6 can be sufficiently loosened to permit of raising the endgate or removing it vertically, if desired, without detaching the rod 7 from the member 6. By disconnecting the hook end 7 of the rod 7 from the eye 6 the hinge-cleat 6 can be readily swung out and the end-gate removed by pushing it out in a horizontal direction, as before stated.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it is thought the advantages of my invention will be readily understood. The same is of a very simple and economical construction and can be readily adapted for any of the ordinary types of wagon-bodies.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In an end-gate fastening means of the character described, the combination with the wagon side, one of the said sides having the ordinary fixed end guide-cleats, the other side having its end terminating in a plane with the outer face of the end-gate, and provided with a single fixedly-held inner'cleat member; of the member 6 hinged to the outer edge of the wagon side, having the fixed cleat, and adapted to swing inwardly and beyond the inner face of the wagon-body side to which it is hinged, to form a guide portion for cooperating with the fixed cleat, the endgate section having the stay portion 2, the rod 7, detachably connected at one end to the hinged member 6, adapted to extend across the end-gate and to bear against its cleats 2, and means on the wagon-body for drawing the said rod to a locking position, said means including a crank-shaft, adapted to be automatically held to its locked position by the strain on the rod 7, substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination with the wagon-body sides 1 1, the cleats 3 3, fixedly secured to the sidel, the outer end of the side 1 and the cleats 3, being slotted horizontally, the fixed cleat 4, secured to the side 1, and the end-gate 2; of the member 6 hinged to the end of the side member 1, to close inward over the end of the said side member, and to project inwardly beyond the inner side of the member 1 to form a cleat portion to cooperate with the fixed cleat 4, the rod 7, one end of which is adapted to play in the slot formed in the members 1 and 3, said rod 7 having a hook portion 7, adapted to detachably engage with the member 6, and the crank-shaft 8, having a pivotal engagement with the rod 7, and provided with a handle member for adjusting it, all being arranged substantially as shown and for the purposes described.
ALBERT A. KELLOGG.
