sPEcIHoA'rIoiv forming. part of 'Letters'ratene No.' 699,911, dated- May: 131eo2.
Application ma Jaimy 25,1902.- serairo. 91,242. (numana To ctZZ'w'tom/ t nfl/ay concern:
'Be it known that I, CALVIN R. DAVIS, a resident of South Bend, in the county of St. Jo# seph and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and usefulImprovements in Clamps; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and eXact description ofthe invention, such as will enable others skilled in thev artto which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in clamps, and more particularly to an improved clamp for colters and jointers, the object of the invention being to provide a clamp of this character which will permit of quick and easy adjustment of the colter or jointer and the rigid securing of the parts in proper position after adjustment.
With this object in View the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts, as will be more fully hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view in side elevation, illustrating my improvements. Fig. 2 is a view in horizontal section of same. Fig. 3 is a view'in vertical section, and Fig. 4L is an enlarged view ofthe. clamping-bolt removed.
1 represents the ordinary beam of a plow,
to which my improved 'clamp is secured, as-
will now be explained.' 2prepresents a metall plate forming an'ntegral partjof the clamp and perforated, as shown, for the reception of bolts 3, passed through the beam ljandv plate 2 and securing the plate rigidly tothe beam by means of nuts It, screwed onto .the bolts.
If it is desired to permit adjustment of the clamp on the beam, I dispense with Athese vbolts 3 and secure the clampl by meansot al U-bolt 5, diagonally embracing the beam, passed through holes at opposite corners of plate 2 and secured against lmovement b v nuts 6. While I have shown both forms of bolts and 5, it is to be understood that only one form is necessary to secure the clamp to the beam, and both are shown for the purpose of illustrating alternatives. On this plate 2 a vertical sleeve .7 is made integral and is adapted to receive the colter or jointer rod'S, and onthe outer wall ot' Asaid sleeve a horizontal housing 9`is located and is open at both ends, communicates between its ends with the interior ov the sleeve, and the bore or channel of this housing is made angular, and the opening in one end-thereof is also so shaped to aline with the interior contour of said housing. An angular clamping-boltlO isadapted to be received in this housing and 6o tapers into cylindrical shapey at one end, where it projects through a circular opening -in the end of the housing and is screwthreaded to receive a nut 12, adapted to move the bolt longitudinally (when the nut is turned) to clamp or release the rod 8. The inner face of the angular portion of said clamping-bolt l0 is inclined or made wedge shape, thus gradually increasing the width ofthe bolt from its cylindricalend tothe an- 7ogular end, so that as the bolt is drawn inwardA by nut l2 it will wedge tightly between the rod 8 and housing 9 and rigidly clamp said rod against movement and can as readily be .moved in the reverse direction to release the ,rod when desired to change the position of the colter or jointer.
.A great many slight changes might be resorted to in the general form and arrangement of the several parts described without depart- 8o Ving from the spirit and scope of myfinvention,
and hence I would have it understood that I do' not wish to limit myself to the precise details set forth, but consider myself at liberty kto make such slight changes and alterations 'as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of my invention.
' Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters 1. A rod-clamp comprising a sleeve to receive the rod, a housing open at its ends and located in the outer faceof the sleeve and communicatingtherewith, and awedge adapt-- ed to be inserted at one end of said housing and project at the other and clamp the rod in the sleeve. t
2. A rod-clamp consisting of a sleeve to receivethe rod,`a -housing open at its ends and located in the outer face of the sleeve and loo communicating therewith, a wedge adapted to be inserted at one open end of said housing ing-bolt.
4. A colter or jointer clamp, comprising a metal plate adapted to be secu red to the beam of a plow, a sleeveintegral with said plate to receive a colter or jointer supporting rod, a
housing on the sleeve, communicating therewith and having an angular bore or channel and an angular opening in one end, a clamping-bolt in said housing made angular and wed ge shape throughout a portion of its length to wedge between the housing and rod, a cylindrical screw-threaded end on said bolt projecting through one yend of said housing and a nut screwed onto said bolt.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
