T0 ALL WHOM IT MAY CON CERN:
Be itknown-hat-FIJ. H. HASSELT., otthe city-of Baltimore, in the county of Baltimore, und vStute cf Maryland, have invented n new und improved YPunching Machine; andI do hereby declare that the follow, ing is a full, clear, and exuctdcscription thereof, which will enable others skilled in the nrt to multe und use the same, referencebcing had to the accompanying drnwings, forming part of-this specification.
The present invention relates to a machine for the punching of holes in afstrip or bund of leather or other material' properly fed thereto; and the mn'chino is the more especially designed for usc` in connection with the manufacture of hose from leather, und to that classof the somel the edgos'ot which'overlep andere joined together by rivets. In the accompanying. plnteof drawings a xnnehine for punching leather, ete., 4constructed according to my improvements is'illustrated- Figure 1 being e plan or top view of the some, und y Figure 2 a trnnsverse vertical" section, taken in the plone of the line :s zu, iig.`1.
Similar-.letters of reference indicate corresponding parte.
A, in the drawings, represents the bed or foundation-.pluto to the machine. B, two standardssecurcd to bed-plato A'.- In these standards B, at their upper ends, n'horizontul shaft, C, is urrnngei to tin'n. This shaft between the two standards B is-provided with guides or' flanges Dsusccptible'of adjustment thereon, according to the distunce Apart which itV is necessary for lthem to have to receive the width of the leather of which the hose is to be inodethut in my machine is to 'be punched. 'This shaft Gv ut one end: has n. zkednnd loose pulley forA convenience in driving it, and at its other end 4hns a. pinion-wheel, E,'i.xed to it, ,which meshes `int-o e. gearwheel, F, fixed toene end ofa horizontal shuftLG, arranged to turn 'in bearings of standards I I tixed to 'the bed-plate A. 0n the shaft'G, between its tivobearing points, nre fixed two India-rubber or other equivalent wheels I,.uhich hre located nearz the centre line of the shaft, and upon th-shaft, beyond the said wheels I, are pulleys or wheels J, similar in size und shape V)vith each other. These pulleys .l each curry n. series of punches a that on both pulleys are equal distances eport.V These punches a nre to be of suitabloiform to punch leather or other material of a.' similar oreqnivalent nature. Directly belo the shaft G, carrying the wheel punches, as above described, isloceted another shaft, L, that :it each end is hung in suitable hearings of similar frames M. These frameset one end are luingto"y the inside of'tlie uprights B, cfirrying guide-shaft C, :md from thence extend under the shnft G, between the standards H therefor, to, and utthcir outer ends- N rest by their set and adjustable screw-s O upon, inclined or wedge-shaped blocksP, that, by means of lever-handles Q, cnn be swung around upon their centre-pins R,and thus mudo to raise the said frames M up or allow them to full or drop down, as the case may be. The shaft L carries between its two bearings whelsS S and T T. The wheels S y' 'are in position for the punches ofthe punch-wheels to act upon them, us the shaft carrying the punching-wheel is revolved, and their peripheries are made-of solder, zinc, pewter, copper, ruw hide, or any other materiel which will not injure the cutting edges to the punches. The otherwheels 'ifL '.l.' are made of Indio. rubber, or other' suitable and similar' material, und are inl position `for thernbber wheels of the shaft G to act against and runA in contact with them. The frames M, to which the louer shaft L is hung,- cerry ulso two feed-rollers U U between the punching-roller and the roller having guides for the leather to the machine, und also a. roller, V, for the leather as it escapes from the machine te pass overeind-be guided therefrom.
With a msehine constructed in its parte' and arranged together as shove described, the leather or other material to he punched is passed over the guide-roller C dnd-between the feed-rollers to and between the rollers csrrying the punching mechsnismvwherein the leather is necessarily punched. The guides to the rollers C serre to guide the leather straight to the punches, land by the rubber wheelstheleather is held smooth und firmly in place us the punches areaeting upon it, which, punches serve Ito prodixce a feeding or drawing of the leather through the machine. VBy the manner lin which the. frames having the lower roller .carrying the punching mechanism are hung they nrc susceptiblecf being operated through the wedge-blocks so that the lowering or raising of such shaft is greatly facilitated and the workingof the machinejrendered much easier and more convenient. i v
Having thusdescribed my invention, what Iclaim os new, as fer as it is now perfected, vis-' v 1. The combination of the shafts G- und L, carryingV punching and rest-wheels, together with feed-wheels I,
i substantially es and for the purpose described. i
2. I also claim the wedge-blocks P, in combination with the frames constituting the bearings to the shaft L, substantially ss and for the purpose specified.
The above speeicat-ion of my invention signed by me this 27th l doy of guns, 1867.
