Description

ISAAC A. HEDGES AND JOSEPH lYLSTORY, OEGlNCINNATLOHlO, ASSIGNORS TO LANE ANDBODLEY, lOF THE SAME PLAGE.
Laim Patent No. 77,484, met May 5, .1868.
IMPROVBMENTlINHMACHINE'S FOR SAWING LATE.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CQNGERN: l
Be it known that we, ISAAC A, HEDGES and JOSEPH M. STORY, of Cincinnati, in the county of'Hauiilton, and State of Ohio, have invented a new and improved Machine for Saw'ing Laths, and other similar light stu", and that the following' description, taken in connectionvwith the accompanying drawings,'herenafter referred to, forms a full and exact speciication of the same, wherein we have set forth the nature andprineiplesyof our said improvements,-by which ouiI invention may be distinguished from all others of a similar Aclass,t ogether v with such parts as we claim, and desire to have secured tous by Letters Patent.
This invention relates to a new and improved machine for sawing'laths, and other similar light st-ui, and it consists iu a novel construction ol` the machine, arrangement of its parts, & c.,las hereinafter fully shown and described, whereby'several advantages are obtained, to wit, compactness, rapidity of work, siuiplici`ty in the construction of the machine, and the little labor required in attending itzwhile in operation'.l v
In the accompanying sheet of drawings- 'v l Figure l is a side view of my in vention.
Figure -2, a plan or top Viewv of the same.
Figures 3 andl, detached perspective views of parts pertaining to the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts'. i v
A is the frame of tlie machine, on one en d of which the saw-arbor B isplaced, having a driving-pulley, C, at one end, and a circular saw, D, at the other end, and also a small pulley, E, upon it, from which motion is communicated to a pulley,'F, on'a shaft, G, located in the lower part of the frame A, underneath the saw-arbor B,said shaft Gr having two pulleys, a, upon it, around one of which' a belt, b, passes, said belt also passingaround a pulley,c, onja shaft, H, at the end of theframe'A opposite to that ivhere'the'saW-arbor B -isplacedl The shaft Hcarries Aa drum, d, around which an endless apron, I, passes, said drum .giving motionto the endless-apron, which passes around a drum, cl', at the opposite end of the box J, through which the upper part of the apron'works. l i 4 The other pulley, a, on the shaft Gr, has a'belt, e, passing around it, andrthis belt also passes around two pulleys', ff, on shafts K K, placed on the frame A', parallel 4with each other and the saw-arbor B, and said belt e also passes around a pulley,.g, in a lever, L', having a'weight, 7t, susp'e'n'ded to its free or disengaged end', 'as shown clearly in g. 1. l
By means of this Weighted orloaded pulley g, a requisite degree of tension is. given the belt e to drive the pulleys ff, and consequently give motion to feedrolls-z' z', on one`end of the shafts K; K, the feedvrolls being at opposite sides of the sawD, and |at the same timegives the necessary weight upon the rolls to cause them tohite, and feed the stuft` offered them.v The-same eiectmay be produced Without 'the lever, by placing the pulley in a gate sliding between vertical ways, Aor by other similar means. A
One end of the shafts is journalled in boxes y', whieh are secured by pivotsik'n holders Z, the latter being provided with cylindrical rods or trunnions m, which are itted loosely inone side of the frame A,"the holders Hitting in recesses. therein, the 'pivots 7c being in line atright angles with the shaftsK K, and the v rods or trunnions m may be secured in place by a set-screw or other means. The cppositeends ofV the shafts K K, at the inner sides of the feed-rolls, have their boxes o in holdersp, the rods or trunnions of which aretted in the frame A, in the same manner 4as those ofthe Iother boxes.v l
L is an adjustable table, fitted to theside of the frame A, underneath the feed-rolls This table-may be adjusted and secured at any desiredpoint by-lset-screws 1'. i
On or above the table L is the gauging-bar M, provided'n'ith lateral arms or lugs s, which pass through l slots in the frame A, and aresecured in position by set-screws t. Beyond the adjustable table L therev is a'xed table-N, which is narrower than L, and hasa parting-strip, u, attached, which terminates in flaring ends, v
To operate the machine, it is desirable or necessary to adjust Ithe feed-rolls to suit the thickness of the stui'fto be passed through or operated upon. lThis is accomplished by elevatingjor depressing lone or both of the box-holders lp of .each shaft K; and -if a material adjustment is necessary, as when very thick stif is being sawed, the table L may be elevated or depressed, and'bysetting in or out the gauging-bar'M, the strips sawed from the bolt may be of greater or less thickness, as desired. t I
The 4operator feeds the stuff or bolt to the saw, the former being carried to the latter by the first feed-rolls t', which will prevent' the saw D, which is un'der-cuttingfroni feeding ormoving the stuff or bolt too rapidly. The other feed-roller z" carries th`e body of the stu" or bolt, ,as well as the strip cut from it, to the rear, where they are parted by the strip u, they Haring end of which changes the direction 'oi'. the stuff or bolt as it leaves Athe rear roll z', and the stui or bolt falls upon the apron I, which carries it back' to theoperator, while ot the same time thestrip sawed fro'm'lthe stu' or 4bolt falls from the opposite side of the fixed table N.
The bperatontherefore, is not required to leave his Aposition while feeding the machine. The weighted n pulley g serves to drive the feed-rolls z' z', 'and' also serves to keep said rolls down in proper position.
Havingrth'us described our invention, we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patenty I The pivoted Weightedlever L and pulley I, in combination with the belt e and pulleysf upon the feedrolls, all arranged and operating as described,'whereby'the-belt is tightened, andthe feed-rolls held in their 7. Y bearingsyasherein shown and described.
2. The journal-boxes j for the shaft-K,'sccred by pivots c in the holders Z, having Vthe vertical shafts m, which are'adjusted higher orlower in'the framing, as herein described, for the 'purpose specified.
