ENGRAVERS RULING-MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 699,859, dated May 13, 1902.
Application filed July 27, 1901. Serial No. 69,939. (No model.)
To (tZZ whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FERDINAND WEsnL, a citizen of the United States, residing in New York, borough of Brooklyn, in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Engravers Ruling- Machines, of which the following is a specifi cation.
This invention relates to an improved machine for lining photo-engravings in a quick and effective manner; and the invention consists of certain details of-construction and combination of parts, which will be fully described hereinafter and finally pointed outin the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a front elevation of my improved machine for lining photo-engravers plates. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a rear elevation. Fig. 4 is an end elevation of the right-hand end of Fig. 8. Fig. 5 is a detail, partlyin section. Fig. 6 is a side elevation, partly in vertical transverse section,
tudinal bar B, of U -shaped cross-section. The
bar 13 is provided with ways to for guiding the tool-head D, which is made to travel back and forth thereon by means of a longitudinal rack Gin the bar 13 and a pinion f, the shaft of which is driven by a hand-crank f. The tool-head D carries the cutting-tool E, by which the lines are cut on the surface of the photo-engraving plate. The cutting-tool E can be adjusted forward and backward 011 the tool-head in a direction at right angles to the same by a screw-nut II, which is arranged at the front part of the tool-head D. The cutting-tool E can be raised or lowered in a socket D of the head D by turning a graduated screw-nut I at the upper end of the spindle, which carries the cutting-tool E to the right or left, so as to raise or lower the tool spindle E. The cutting-tool E is lifted clear above the plate for the return motion ofthe tool-head by moving afulcrumed elbow-lever K at the upper end of the tool-head, which elbow-lever is connectedwith the upper end of the tool-spindle, toward the right, the cutting-tool being returned into its former position by means of a helical spring inside of the socket D.
A clamp V, actuated by an eccentric at the end of a handle V, (shown clearly in Fig. 3,) is guided on a horizontal bar W, which is pivoted to an upright piece X at one end and held in position at its opposite recessed end on the piece Y and slidable thereon, as shown in Fig. 2, said clamp serving to hold the photo-engravingto be lined firmly in position on the table A.
The plate to be lined is placed in position on the table against a stop-gage N at the left end of the table, said stopgage being arranged transversely to the table and adjustable thereon. A spring-actuated side gage M is pivoted at opposite ends to a frame M, which is again pivoted at its lower end to the supporting-frame A, as shown in Figs. 1 and 4, said gage being adjusted by means of a screw-nut O,which engages a threaded spindle O, that is attached to the central front part of the supporting-frame A.
In placeof the side gage M the movable side gage M (shown in Figs. 7 and 8) maybe used. This gageis adjustedbyahand-Wheel P, which is attached to a longitudinalrod B, provided with two worms S, one at each end, said worms meshing with two worm-gears T, that are arranged at right angles to the worms S. The worm-gears T are fastened to laterally-movable pieces T, that are guided in projections U of the table, said projections U being placed parallel to each other at a defi nite distance apart. The pieces T support in center pins '6 the spring-actuated pivot-rod m, to which the side gage M is attached. By moving the hand-wheel P the gage M is caused to travel inwardly or outwardly, according to the direction of motion which is imparted to the handle.
In place of moving the tool-head D over the Work by means of a crank-handle, pinion, and
rack, as shown in Figs. 1 and 6, it may be actuated by a screw-spindle G, which is supported in suitable bearings of the U-shaped bar B, as shown in Fig. 9. The screw-spindle G is turned by a hand-crank G at one end of the same, but may also be turned by a suitable power-transmitting mechanism. The screw-spindle engages a screw-nut on the tool-head D, which is otherwise provided with the same accessories as before described.
The operation of the improveddevice is as follows: The engravers plate to be lined is 1 shown in position by dotted lines, Fig. 1. The clamp V is first opened, and the plate, placed upon the table, is moved into contact with the stop-gage N at the side of the table. The edge gage M, which is under spring tension and also adjustable inwardly or outwardly, is used, so as to permit the proper adjustment of the plate upon the table. After the plate is clamped the cutting-tool is lowered to the surfaces of the plate by means of the screwnnt I and is then advanced by turning the hand-crank, and when the end of the cut is reached the tool is lifted against the action of the compressing-spring E by depressing the elbow-lever K, connected with the upper end of the tool-spindle, and by reversing the direction of the turning of the crank the tool is returned to its initial position. After the tool is moved laterally the proper distance the next line is cut in the same manner as before, and thus repeated through the operation of lining the plate. When the operation is completed, the plate can be removed from the machine after releasing the clamp.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In an engravers rulingmachine, the combination of a table, a longitudinal bar of U-shaped cross section supported thereon and having the open face thereof to the front, parallel guideways provided at the front edge of the top and bottom faces of said bar, a longitudinal rack provided on the inner surface of the lower part of said bar, a toolhead adapted to reciprocate on said guideways, a shaft mounted in said tool-head, a pinion secured to the inner end thereof adapted to mesh with said rack, a crank for operating the same, a tool-socket vertically arranged on said tool-head, means for inwardly or outwardly adjusting said socket relatively to said tool-head, and a downwardly spring-actuated tool-spindle provided in said socket, substantially as set forth.
2. In an engravers ruling-machine, the combination of a tool-head guided on suitable ways, means for reciprocating the same, a vertically-disposed tool-socket arranged on said tool-head, a tool-spindle provided therein, a spring provided in said socket for actuating said spindle, an elbow-lever pivoted to said tool-head and connected with the upper end of said spindle, ascrew-nut arranged in the upper end of said socket adapted to adjust said spindle in vertical direction, and means for adjusting said socket inwardly or outwardly relatively to said tool-head, substantially as set forth.'
3. In an engravers ruling machine, the combination, with a table having a side gage, of a tool-head, means for guiding and means for operating the same, a cutting-tool adjustably secured to said tool-head, a bar at one end pivotally mounted on the table, and having a recessed opposite end, a suitable piece supported at the opposite end of the table and adapted to slidably support the recessed end of said bar, and a clamping means adapted to slide on said bar, substantially as set forth.
4. In an engravers ruling-machine, the combination, with a table having a side gage, of a tool-head, means for guiding and means for reciprocating the same, an adjustable cutting-tool secured to said tool-head, an adjustable clamping means secured to said table, and an inwardly and outwardly adjustable and spring-actuated edge gage secured to said table, substantially as set forth.
5. In an engravers ruling -machine, the combination, with a table having a side gage, of a tool-head, means for guiding and means for reciprocating the same, acutting-tool secured to said tool-head, a clamping means secured to said table, a downwardly springactuated edge gage, movable supports on the frame of said table for pivotally securing said edge gage, and means for reciprocating said supports, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
FERDINAND WESEL.
