IMPROVEMENT IN FILE-CUTTING MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 57,680, dated September 4,1866.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HENRY B. GoMEn, of Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in File-Cutting Machines; and I hereby declare the following to be a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
My invention consists in the combination and arrangement of a hammer and cuttingtool, said hammer and cuttingtool being operated by means of cams, lifters, and springs, the whole being so constructed,combined, and arranged that the cutter in its action will impart the desired motion to theblank file and give any desired force to the hammer and cutter.
To enable others skilled in the art to-make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a front elevation of my improved file-cuttin g machine. Fig. 2 represents a vertical section of the same. Fig. 3 represents a perspective view of the tooll1older with the cutting-tool arranged in it. Fig. 4 represents a vertical section of the tool-holder and cuttin g-tool. 1
1n the drawings, A represents the frame of the machine, which is provided with crosspieces at and m and guides O for the slides 8 of the tool-holderB, in which is placed a piece marked 6, which is pivoted to parts 6 of the tool-holder B at the point marked 6. d represents the mandrel in which the cutting-tool 9 is secured.
In the tool-holder B is placed a spring, 0, which is used for the purpose of holding the piece 6 back against the back of the holder B. The forward movement of the piece c, with the mandrel d and cutter 9, is regulated by the setscrew marked 5.
The tool-holder B is arranged in the guides C so that it will rise and fall with the lifter a, which is moved in the guide marked 4 by the eccentric lifter marked 2, which is secured on the shaft marked h, which is supported on and has its bearings in the pieces marked k. On this shaft hare secured two other lifters marked 1 and 3, the lifter 1 being used for operating the spring 9 and lever 10, which are used for giving to the piece 6, mandrel d, and cutter 9 a forward movement, and thereby move the blank file and its bed; and the lifter 3 is used for lifting the hammer f, which is arranged in the crosspieces 00 and w, and is provided with an adjustable arm, m, which is used for regulating the stroke of the hammer.
The hammer f and the toolholder B, with the parts attached, should be so constructed and arranged that theycan be set and adjusted to any desired angle or inclination, so that any desired level or under-cut or angle can be given to the teeth of the file.
The roller 15 should be made hollow and furnished with a number of small holes, and so arranged that it can be readily filled with oil, which oil will percolate or ooze out of the roller,
and spread over the blank of the file by the action of the roller, which roller should always be placed forward of the cutting-tool--that is to say, the roller should move over and oil the blank of the file. The roller t is placed in the rear of the cutter 9, and travels over the teeth .as they are cut by the cutter 9. These two rollers t and t are arranged in a frame, 3 which is furnished with a handle marked 1", which is used for raising up the roller for the purpose of removing the cut file and supplying its place with a fresh blank.
The roller t and t may be made of any suitable material, but in all cases should be covered with india-rubber or some othersoft and flexible substance that will yield to the teeth of the file, and thereby properly spread the oil over the blank of the file and over the teeth after they are cut.
The arrangement of the rollers with relation to the file J and the cutter 9 is clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
The bed e for the blank and cut file should be made of lead or some other soft metal or other material that will not injure the cut teeth of the file by the jarring action of the cutter9 in cutting the blank. The bed e is secured in a slide, a, which is placed in a groove made in the base 20 of the frame A.
The arrangement of the bed 1) and slide a in the base w of the frame will readily be understood by reference to Figs. 1 and 2.
In the drawings the machine is represented as being arranged for cutting the teeth in the blank from the butt or head toward the point; but the machine can be arranged'to cut from the point toward the butt or head-that is to say, the machine can be arranged to out from either end of the file.
The operation of my improved file-cutting machine isas follows: Having all things constructed and arranged as represented in the accompanying drawings, I supply the roller t with oil-and place the blank file J on the bed 1;, and apply power to the crank 11, which will revolve the shaft h, which will cause the lifter 3 to come in contact with the adjustable arm at, and thereby raise the hammer f, which will drop after the lifter 3 has passed from under the arm m, and strike the niandrelwd, which will cause the cutter 9 to cut the teeth in the blank J. The cam 1 will then come in contact with the spring 9 and press it against the lever 10, which will press the piece a forward, and the cutter 9, which has entered the blank J the desired depth for forming a tooth, will cause the blank J, bed 1;, and slide a to move forward the proper distance for the cutter to make thenext tooth. The lifter2 will then come in contact with the shoulder 16 of the lifter a, which will raise up the tool-holder B, and the spring 0 will press back the piece 0 to the proper distance for the cutter 9 to form another tooth. Thus the machine and its various parts will work until the cutting of the teeth is completed in the file-blank J.
The cutting is made fine or coarse by means of the set-screw 5, which will regulate the forward motion of the piece 0 in the tool-holder B, the operation and mot-ion of which will readily be understood by reference to Figs. 3 and 4.
Having thus described the nature and construction and operation of my improved filecutting machine, what I claim as of my invention is 1. Moving the file-blank and its bed, through the medium of the cutting-tool, by means sub stantially as herein described, and for the purpose set forth.
2. The adjustable-lifting-arm m, when used in combination with the lifter 3, hammer f, mandrel d, and cutter 9, as herein described, and for the purpose set forth.
3. The tool-holder B, provided with spring 0, set-screw 5, and piece 6, for holding the mandrel d, said holder being used in combination with the lever 10, spring g, lifter a, cam 1, eccentric lit'ter2, constructed, arranged, combined, and operating substantially as herein described, and for the purpose set forth.
