' Letters Patent llo'.f69,962,4 dated October 22, 1867.
IMPBVED BOLT-TRIMMBR.
Be it known that I, JltssE BLACKINTON,' of Roscoe, in 'thc county of Winnebago, and State of Illinois, have inventeda new and useful Bolt-Trimmer, -or vimplement for trimming or cutting bolts, rivets, Btc.; and I do herebydcclnre that the following is azfull, clear, and exact description of the construction 'and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this spciiicaticn, in which- Figure 1 is a. perspective view.
Figure 2, a. view of one of'the levers.
Figure 3, of one of the cutters, and
Figure4, of a connection o f one .of the cutters.
Like letters in the different figures refer to like parts.
The nature of my.inventio`n consists in so hinging or connecting the cutters A A in my bolt-trimmer to Vthe `levers L and' M, that the cutting edges C C will not only be parallel with each other when closed, but also parallel, or nearly so, when opened, so that when they are opened aboli', 'or rivet to be trimmed may be inserted with equal facility at all points between the cutting edges, whether near to the fulcrum or remote therefrom; and also so that the edges` of' the cutters, when engaging with and passing through the metal t9 be divided, will maintain a parallclrelation to cach other, instead of opening widest at the points most remote from the fulcrum, as is the'case with other bolt-trimmers 'and cutters.
My invention also comprises a new way of connectingand compounding the lever D with the shorter lever Mund thelever L, so as tojincrease the streng-th of the connection; also a set-screw, arranged so as to prevent the cutting edges C, C from being injured; also a slot and bearing-pin, by which th'e'levcr'D operates the lever lM; also a flat-headed bolt, working in a slot, to insure the proper approach of the cutting edges.,
Tocnable others skilled in'the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction und operation.
I prefer to make-the principal levers of malleable iron, on account of cheapness, buttheymay'be made of any other suitable material. The cutters A A are made vof'steel. The connections B may be made eitherof 'steel or iron. The vcutters A A are made to vibrate on the bolts which attach them to the levers or jaws L and M, so that, as they/arc opened and closed, the connections B B, operating o n the ends of the-cutters A A,
will move them so as to maintain the parallelism of their cutting edges C lC. By changing the relative lengths of the cutter-arms A A andthe connections B B, 'the cutting edges C C may he made to open most at the outer points or the inner points, as desired. For instance, if the arms `AA are made of shorter proportion than that represented in thc'drawings, the cutting edgeswill vopen wider at their inner points, and if lengthened, they willopen wider ht their outer points.
That part of the lever L represented at'thc point H' isprovided with a recess its under side, to receive un elevated bearing, II', on the end ofl the lever D. This gives greater strength to the connection, in propor-l tion te the expenses and convenience of manufacture, than would otherwise be the case.
I also make a set-screw, I, which stops the action ofthe llevers, by contact with the stop 0, so -as to prevent the cutting edges C C from being injured by each other. In the lever D, I make a slot, F, in which operates the pin E,for moving the shorter. lever M, to which the piu E is attached. I also make a let-headed bolt, I), which is fastened to thc lever M, and works in theslot` R, bearing on the lever L,.to keep their inner surfaces together and insure a direct approach ofthe lcutting edges. C C.
What I claini as my invention, and desire 'to secure-by Letters Patent, is l 1. The combination and arrangement of the cutters A A withfthe connections BB and the levers LY M, a8 herein described, for the purposes set forth. i
2. The arrangement of4v the'rcccss H and the elevated bearing H', in combination with the levers D, L, anr' M, for the purposes set forth.
3. The slot F and the pin E, in combination with the levers D, L, and M, when arranged as and operating for tho purposes set forth.
4. The lat-headed bolt P, in combination with theA slot and the levers L and M, when arranged as and operating for the purposes setforth. v Y
