J 'IILI US DAVIS, OF McLEA N, NEW YORK. Letters Patent No, 69,901, dated 0ctober 15,, 1867; ante-elated Ocjcbcr 8, 1867,
IMPROVED FOUNTAIN BRUSH.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be'it known that I, JULIUS'DM'IS, of McLean, in the county of, Tompkins, in the State of New York, have invented a Fountain Paint and Whitewash Brush; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which= Figure 1 is a side view.
Figure 2 is :1. end view.
Figure 3 is a top view.
Figure 4 is an end view, with a portion of the cup broken away to show the cylinder; and
Figure 5 is a transverse section. A
The nature of my invention relates to a fountain brush for painting and whitewashing, and consists, first,
in the employment, for the retention of paint or whitewash, of a hollow, revolving cylinder, having its curvod sides perforated after the manner of a sprinkler, and covered with suitable cloth for the absorption of the paint or whitewash that escapes through the holes in the cylinder, substantially as and for the purpose hereinafterdescribed; second, in the employment, on either side of and in connection with the cylinder,-of a soft brush, of India rubber, cloth, or hair, substantially as and for the purpose hereinafter described; third, in the employment, for holding and supporting the retaining perforated cylinder and brushes, of a semi-cylindrical cup, so pivoted to a framework and handle that the cupand contents gravitate to an upright position, substantially as hereinafter described.
Toenable others skilled in the art to'make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation. I
I make the semi-cylindrical cup A substantially of the form shownein the drawings, having short pivots a, that take bearing in the parts b,'that are connected by the supporting braces G and C to the socket D of the handle E. The pivots a are placed above the centre of the cup A, as shown in fig. 2, so as to cause the cup to retain its upright position, however the handle may be inclined. I prefer to make the cup, braces, and socket of tin, although any material may be used. Within the cup is a hollow metallic cylinder, G, that has its whole curved sides (1 perforated (e, fig. 3,) after the manner of a sprinkler, and then covered with soft flannel or other suitable cloth, a. This cylinder revolves freely on central end pivotsf, that take bearing in the ends of the cup. The side margins of the cup are constructed with suitable sockets, as shown, for the brushes B. These brushes may be of India rubber, cloth, or hair, with their ends on or near a level with the upper part of the cylinder The cylinder is filled with the painting or whitewashing material through the orifice it, that may be closed with a cork or slide.
To operate my brush, it is only necessary to fill the cylinder G with the paint or whitewash to be used, and then, seizing the handle E, to roll the cylinder over the surface to be whitewashed or painted, at the same time pressing the cylinder against the surface'with suflieient force to cause the brushes B to sweep the same. By this operation the paint or whitewash, escaping from the revolving cylinder G, is taken up or absorbed by the cloth covering 0, and by it left upon the surface over which the device passes. Should it be left unevenly, the brush following smooths it off. .With the two brushes B the cylinder may be rolled in either direction and still have a'bru'sh following. The cup A not only serves as a support to the cylinder G and brushes B, but also serves to catch-and retain the drippingsfrom the cylinder.
What I claimfand for which I desire Letters Patent of the United States, is-
1. 'The revolvinghollow cylinder G, having its entire curved sides pierced with orifices e, and covered with cloth c, to allow the paint or whitewash within to escape gradually and spread itself evenly over the surface to be covered as the cylinder is rolled over it, substantially as and for the purpose described.
9,. The combination and arrangement of the revolving hollow cylinder G and brushes 13,1vhen the cylinder and brushes are constructed and used substantially as and for the purpose hereinbefore particularly described.
3. The combination and arrangement of the revolving hollow cylinder G, brushes B, and cup A, when the cylinder, brushes, and cup are constructed and used substantially as and for the purpose sot forthyfd' described.
4. The combination and arrangement of the revolving hollow cylinder G, brushes B, cup N, frame-support vb, C and G, socket D, and handles E, when the whole are constructed and used'substai rt-ially as and for the purpose described.
' JULIUS DAVIS.
