EMMA JESTER, OF PUEBLO, COLORADO.
DISTILLING APPARATUS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 698,958, dated April 29, 1902. Application filed August 29,1901. Serial No. 73,688. (No model-7 To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EMMA JESTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pueblo, county of Pueblo, State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Distilling Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to household waterdistillating apparatus.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple, inexpensive, and durable distilling apparatus which can be readily applied to and removed from a tea-kettle to furnish a suitable amount of distilled water for household purposes and which, owing to its peculiar construction, will be adapted to be set on the stove and occupy a small amount of space, as also to be moved about on the stove to prevent interference with articles thereon.
The invention comprehends a condenser, a pipe connecting the same with the kettle, and connecting and attaching means, all of improved construction and combined in a novel manner, as set forth in detail hereinafter.
The novel features of the invention are recited in the appended claims. 7
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1.is a View illustrating the invention in use; Fig. 2, a detail view of the pipe and attaching devices; Fig. 3, a detail view illustrating the manner in which the buttons engage with the kettle; Fig. 4, a detail view illustrating the manner in which the connectingarm engages with the condenser, and Fig. 5 a detail vertical section, on a reduced scale, of the apparatus, illustrating how the condenser is suspended above the stove.
The numeral 1 designates an ordinary teakettle to which the invention may be applied.
At 2 I have shown a pipe having suitable elbows 3 at its ends, one of which is provided with a collar 4:, to which is attached a chain 5, having a stopper 6, which can be inserted in the spout of the tea-kettle when distillation is to be had. i
The numeral 7 designates turn-buttons on the collar 4, which have hooks 8, adapted to engage the interior of the tea-kettle at the margin of the cover-opening to secure the pipe 2 to the kettle. At 9 is shown an arm riveted to the collar 4 at 10 and provided with a lug 11. At the other end of the pipe is a collar 12 and a projection 13.
The numeral 14 designates the condenser, which hasa rim 15 at its top and an ear 16, provided with a groove 17, at its under portion, in which the projection 11-is adapted to be received to hold the condenser braced by the arm 9 and supported above the stove, while the part 13 projects down into the condenser and the flange or collar 12 rests on the top 15 thereof. The condenser is provided with a bail18, which is adapted to be hooked over a pin 19 on one of the elbows 3.
It is apparent that upon stopping up the spout of the kettle with the stopper 6 the water will condensein the condenser 14. When a suitable quantity has been condensed therein, the bail can be detached from the pin and the arm disengaged from the ear, permitting the removal of the condenser for the purpose of emptying the contents thereof into a suitable vessel. It is also apparent that the condenser is adapted to be supported above the stove on which the kettle is located, thereby giving a compact construction and obviating the employment of a separate support, and also that the condenserand pipe can be swung around above the stove while attached to the kettle to position the condenser wherever most convenient in order that other cooking vessels or utensils on the stove will not be interfered with. At the same time the device is adapted for application to any ordinary tea-kettle and is light and not liable to be damaged and capable of being produced at small cost. It will also be clear that if at any time it is desired to pour water from the kettle this can be done without detaching the distilling apparatus by simplyremoving the stopper and tilting the kettle and apparatus. Having thus described my invention, what Iclaim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
' 1. In an apparatus for distillation; the combination with a condenser, of a pipe extending outlaterally therefrom, means for detachably connecting one endof the pipe to v the condenser, and. an arm detachably connecting the overhanging portion of the pipe to the condenser.
2. In an apparatus for distillation, the combination with a condenser having an ear, of a pipe extending out laterally therefrom, means for detachably connecting one end of the pipe to the condenser, and an arm connected to the overhanging portion of the pipe and provided with a projection which is adapted for engagement with the ear.
3. In an apparatus for distillation, the combination with a condenser, of a pipe extending out laterally therefrom, and a pivoted bail detachably connecting the overhanging portion of the pipe to the condenser.
4. In an apparatus fordistillation, the combination with a condenser, of a pipe adapted for connection thereto, a pin on the pipe, and a bail pivoted to the condenser and adapted to engage the pin.
5. In an apparatus for distillation, the combination with a condenser, of a pipe extending out laterally therefrom, a bail pivoted to the condenser, a pin on the pipe with which the bail is adapted to engage, and an arm on the overhanging portion of the pipe adapted for detachable engagement with the condenser.
6. In an apparatus for distillation, the combination with a condenser, of a pipe connected thereto and extending out laterally therefrom, and a distilling vessel suspended in mid-air from the overhanging end of the pipe.
7. The combination with a tea-kettle, of a condenser, an overhanging pipe connected to the condenser and having a collar on its overhanging portion, turn-buttons on the collar having hooks adapted to engage the margin of the opening in the kettle, an arm connecting the collar with the condenser, and a stopper for the spout of the tea-kettle which is attached to the collar.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
v EMMA JESTER.
