To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, PHILIPP FORG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Beer-Tapping Devices, of

which the following'is a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. I

The object of this invention is to provide improved means for tapping beer barrels, casks, and other vessels of this class, and particularly to provide an improved hammer for this purpose which is used in connection with the ordinary bung-driving device and draw-0E tube usually employed; and with these and other objects in view the invention consists in an improved hammer or mallet for the purpose specified constructed as hereinafter described and claimed.

In the drawings forming part of this specification, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by the same reference characters in each of the views, Figure 1 is a sectional side view of myimproved mallet or hammer and showing the parts in connection with which it is used for tapping a beer-barrel or other vessel, and Fig. 2 a perspective view of the hammer or mallet det-ached.

In the drawings forming part of this specification I have indicated at a a part of one end of a beer barrel or cask, and I have also shown at b an ordinary bung-driving device, by means of which the bung is driven into a barrel in the operation of tapping the same, and this bung-driving device is conical in form and provided with the usual central bore or passage b and in the upper and larger end thereof with an enlarged chamber b the inner walls of which are screw-threaded, as shown at If, and in the bottom of this chamber is placed an elastic packing a, and above said packing is placeda screw-threaded tubular plug (1, in the opposite sides of which are formed cavities or recesses (1 adapted to receive the prongs of a wrench, whereby said plug may be screwed down tight or to the packing-ring c or removed from its position whenever desired. I have also shown at e an ordinary draw-off pipe, and in the practice of my invention I provide a hammer or mallet g, which is of the form shown in the drawings, said hammer or mallet being oblong in form and the lower end thereof being preferably angular in form, as shown at 9 and said hammer or mallet is provided atone side with a longitudinal opening g one of the side Walls of which is extended outwardly and curved in the direction of the other as clearly shown in the drawing.

The body portion of the hammer or mallet at the back thereof is circular in cross-section and is reduced in size above the lower end g and is adapted to be firmly grasped in one hand, andin one side thereof is formed a longitudinal opening 9 through which the fingers of the hand may be inserted.

The hammer or mallet is provided at the upper end with two outwardly-curved projecting jaws or prongs h, which form a wrench for operating the plug d, and said hammer or mallet is also provided at its lower end with two outwardly-directed and upwardlycurved prongs or jaws c'.

The operation of this device will be practically the same as other devices of this class, and whenever it is desired to open a beerbarrel or similar vessel the draw-oflf tube e is inserted into the bung driving device, as shown in-Fig. 1, and said bung-driving device is held on the stopper in the head of the barrel or cask. The hammer or mallet g is then placed on the draw-off tube, as shown in Fig. 1, said draw-off tube passing through the longitudinal opening 9 into the central portion of the hammer or mallet. The hammer or mallet is then operated so as to drive the bung-driving device into the head of the barrel, and in this operation the bung-driving device enters the head of the barrel and securely closes the opening therein, while the beer or other liquid in the barrel passes out through the bung-driving device and through the draw-off tube in the usual manner.

Before driving the bung-driving device into the head of a barrel, as shown in Fig. 1, the wrench, consisting of the prongs or jaws h, is used to screw down the plug d, and this operation forces the elastic packing-ring c to securely grasp and hold the draw-oft tube, and

\ v t u this prevents the liquid from escaping around said draw-off tube and forces it to pass through said tube, it being understood that the beer or other liquid in the barrel or cask is under pressure, as is usual in this class of devices.

The bung-driving device is also provided with a collar 75, which may be readily connected therewith or detached therefrom, as may be preferred, and Whenever it is desired to remove the bung-driving device from the barrel the head of the hammer or mallet is placed on the head of the barrel, the prongs or jaws '5 passed under the collar k, and the said bung-driving device is lifted from the barrel, as will be readily understood.

By forming the slot or opening 9 as described and projecting one of the side walls thereof and curving it in the direction of the other I facilitate the .operation of the device by reason of the fact that in the operation of sliding the hammer or mallet on the tube 6 the said tube is not so apt to come out through the opening in the side thereof as it would be if said opening were radial only, and the hammer or mallet is retained on said tube, the lateral movement thereof being retarded to an extent by the extended and curved side wall of the said slot or opening.

The device is simple in construction and operation and perfectlyadapted to accomplish the result for which itis intended, and changes therein and modifications thereof may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. A beer-tapping hammer or mallet which is oblong in form and provided in one side thereof with a longitudinal opening, one of the sidewalls of said opening being extended and curved in the direction of the other, said hammer or mallet being also provided at one end with projecting members forming a wrench,substantially as shown and described.

2. A beer-tapping hammer or mallet which is oblong in form and provided in one side thereof with a longitudinal opening, one of the sidewalls of said opening being extended and curved in the direction of the other, said hammer or mallet being also provided at one end With projecting members forming a wrench, and at the opposite end with projecting lifting hooks or members, substantially as shown and described.
