UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRIEDRICH PETTGE AND LUD\VIG METZGER, OF DESSAU, ANHALT, GERMANY.
BUNG.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 403,956, dated May 28, 1889.
Application filed February 27, 1889. Serial No. 301,321. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that we, FRIEDRICH PETTGE and LUDWIG METZGER, both subjects of the Duke of Anhalt, residing at Dessau, Duchy of Anhalt, German Empire, have .invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bungs, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in bungs for casks, barrels, and other receptacles of the kind, which permit air to be admitted into the cask.
The invention has for its object to provide ready means for such admission of air; and it consists inthe various features of improvement more fully pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal section of our improved bung. Fig. 2 is a plan thereof, and Fig. 3 a sectional side view of the wrench used for operating the bung.
The letter D represents a cask, barrel, or other receptacle, into the bung-hole of which there is placed an elastic block, G, preferably made of rubber, and having an upper and a lower cavity. Into these cavities there are fitted the conical spheroidal or semi-globular heads A B. The inner head, B, is provided with a screw-rod, b, that is embraced by a nut, M, Within the hollow of the head A. This nut has preferably a shoulder, on, adapted to bear upon the head.
In order to prevent the nut from slipping off the screw-rod, the latter is provided with an enlargement or flange, s, that may be formed by the head of a screw inserted into rod b, as shown. Through the head A there extend the air-ports Z, while the head B is provided with the grooves "n.
In use the nut M is grasped and turned by a Wrench, p. If the nut is tightened up, the heads A B are drawn together to compress the rubber G and exclude the air. Upon loosening the nut the heads A B are separated and air is free to enter the cask through ports Z and grooves 71.
What We claim is- 1. The combination of elastic block Gwith head A, having ports Z, and with head B, having grooves 01, and with screw-rod b and nut M, substantially as specified.
2. The combination of elastic block G with perforated head A, grooved head B, screw-rod Z), having flange S, and with nut M, having flange m, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof we hereunto sign our names, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses, this 19th day of December, 1888.
FRIEDRICH PETTGE. LUDWVIG METZGER.
