u. BAUER. BUNG AND MEANS FOR DRAWING SAME.
(Amalie-on filed Doc- 10, 1900.) (No Nodal.)
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HEINRICH BAUER, OF FRANKENTIIAL PFALZ, GERMANY.
BUNG AND MEANS FOR DRAWING SAME.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 675,921, dated June 11, 1901.
Application filed December 19, 1900. Serial No. 40,846. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known thatLIIEINRIoII BAUER, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, and a resident of Frankenthal Pfalz, Germany, have invented a new and useful Improvement in )ungs andMeansfor DrawingtheSame, which invention is clearly set forth in the following description.
My invention relates to bungs such as are employed in closing and calking the bungholes of barrels used for exporting beer or other liquids; and it consists of a hung of novel construction, together with means for drawing the same from the barrel when it is so desired.
In the accompanying drawings, in which similar letters of reference refer throughout to similar parts, Figures 1, 2, and 3 respectively illustrate a section of a barrel with the new bung and drawing device in longitudinal section, cross-section, and plan views. Fig. 4 is an enlarged view of Fig. 1, illustrating the manner of operating the drawing device. Fig. 5 is an end view, in partial cross-section, of the drawing device.
In the construction of my invention I employ a bung q, somewhat truncated in form and adapted to snugly enter a correspondingly-formed bung-hole cut in the barrel. Said bung is provided with an annular groove r on its circumference, in which a ring or filling of rubber, hemp, &c., is placed, so that as the bung is forced in the said filling calks the bung-hole and the increased frictional contact serves to hold the bung firmly in position. Said bung q is also provided with a perpendicular opening, in which a cork, &c., 0 is forced, and which latter can be easily withdrawn by a corkscrew for the purpose of admitting air when it is desired to tap the barrel.
In exporting a plate can be tacked over the bung, as is now done in the trade, if so desired.
When cleansing the barrel, the bung q can be easily removed by the drawing device. 43
This consists of a platep, adapted to-rest on the barrel and carrying a standard 8, which, acting as a fulcrum, has a lever h mounted on its upper end. Swung on the forward end of the said lover is an arm ,2, carrying a headpiece or pendulum Z on its free end. In employment, the pendulum is thrust through the cork-hole in the bung until it is free of the latter, whence it swings around, so as to lie transversely to the plane of the said hole, and when the opposite end of the said lever is depressed the pendulum Z is forced against the under face of the bung, as illustrated by the dotted lines in Figs. 1 and 4. By exerting a slight force on the said lever the bung is quickly and easily forced out of its hole without damage to itself or to the barrel.
It is thus seen that I have invented a device for closing the bung-holes and opening the same without disturbing the contents of the barrel, as it is only necessary when tapping the barrel to withdraw the said cork, and also which does not injure either the barrel, its staves, or the bung itself.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to protect by Letters Patent, is
The combination with a hung having an opening therethrough, of a cork adapted to enter said opening, an arm passed through the same, a lever pivotally mounted and pivotally connected with the upper end of said arm, and a pendulum loosely hung upon the lower end of the said arm, and through which pendulum said lower end passes, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand, in the presence of two witnesses, this 26th day of July, 1900.
HEINRICH BAUER.
