UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES MADISON THORP, OF ALAMEDA, CALIFORNIA.-
WINDOW-OPEN ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N o. 698,760, dated April 29, 1902. Application filed September 13, 1900. Serial No; 29,923, (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JAMES MADISON THORP, a citizen of the United States, residing at Alameda, in the county of Alameda and State of California, have invented a new and useful- Window-Opener, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvementsin windows, whereby Verticailysliding and weighted windows are made to swing inward for convenience in cleaning the outer surface thereof. I attain this object by means of the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the inside of an ordinary window with the lower half of the inside bead removed and the bottom sash swung inward without hinges, but hanging on its cords and held open by means of a brace hereinafter described; and Fig. 2 is a larger perspective of the upper right-hand corner of the same sash, together with that part of the window-jamb to which the brace is attached, showing the position of the brace and cord when the sash is held open.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throu ghout the several views.
Toimprove an ordinary window in the manner described, I first out the window-bead at 2', Fig. 1, as shown, dividing the same into the fixed portion j and the movable portion it. Then into that part of the jamb Z exposed by removing the bead k I bore a shallow holeat H anda deeper hole at H, the distance apart being the length of the brace A, and between these holes I cut a groove H Then with a screw or pin I loosely pivot the eye end of the brace A in the hole II and set the forked end and the shank into the hole H and groove H respectively. In this position the brace remains flush with the jamb Z, thereby allowing the sash to be swung freely inward supported by its'own cords and without hinges and held open by means of the brace A, as
shown. I then lower the upper sash, cut the parting-bead at F, and remove the lower half of the same, then swing said upper or outer sash inward against the one already open, and changev the fork of thebrace A to'the cord of the outer sash. Thus both sash are held open by the same brace.
sash inward against the other and change the brace-fork to the outer cord. This glass may now be cleaned on the outside. Now reverse the above operations and the window will assume the usual conditions of the ordinary window.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-' In a window-opener a brace made with a fork at one end to receive a window-cord and an eye at the other to receive a pin or screw, said eye loosely countersunk and pivoted in a window-ja'mb immediately behind the window-bead, a pocket formed in said jamb to receive said brace, substantially as shown and described and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification'in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JAMES MADISON THORP.
