SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 698,723, dated April 29, 1902.
Application filed February 12, 1902. Serial No. 93,768. (No model.)
T0 (0% w/wm it may concern:
Be it known that we, MILVERN J. lVIORFORD and GEORGE E. AMBROSE, citizens of the United States, residing at Skidrnore, in the county of Nodaway and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vermin Exterminators, of which the following is a specification, referonce being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
Our invention relates to new and useful improvements in vermin-exterminators for poultry; and its object, among other things, is to provide a device of simple and inexpensive construction which may be readily adjusted to hold motionless a fowl of any size during the operation of fumigation.
Another object is to employ novelmeans whereby the fowl is prevented from smothering during the operation.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel-construction and combination of parts hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, showing the preferred form of my invention, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective View of the device, showing the lid raised anda fowl in position.
Fig. 2 is a section on line 2 2, Fig. 3. Fig. 3*
is a plan view with the lid removed. Fig. 4 is an end elevation. Fig. 5 is a similar view of the opposite end. Fig. 6 is an enlarged detail View of a portion of said end, showing the slide raised and also showing in dotted lines said slide reversed; and Fig. 7 is a detail view of an adjusting-screw'and showing the means for holding it in operative position.
Referring to the figures by characters of reference, D is abox formed of'any suitable material and havingalid K hinged to one side thereof. One end of the box is slotted downward from its upperedge, and the sides or edges of the slot are beveled on opposite sides, as shown at G, thereby forming guides for a slide 0, mounted in the slot. This slide is provided at one side ofthe center with an upwardly-extending slot E, covered by a sheet of rubber or other elastic material I, having an aperture 6 therein.
Slidably mounted in the box D are two vertical strips B 13'', arranged at right angles to each other. To the innerand outer face of each strip is secured a metal plate fand 6, respectively, eachof which has an aperture registering with an aperture in the strip. Swiveled within these apertures is the upset end 9 of ascrew Z). This screw engages and projects through an intern ally-threaded sleeve 0, fitted within the side of the box and secured thereto in any suitable manner, as by means of a collar (Z. Each screw b has a head A, which can be readily gripped by the fingers when it is desired to adjust the strip.
One end of the lid K is preferably cut away, as shown at H, so to permit the slide 0 to be raised when the cover is down upon the box. A suitable h'asp I and staple M or other desired means may be employed for locking the lid when closed.
In operation a fowl is placed in the box between the sides and the strips B and B. Said strips are then adjusted inward until the fowl is held practically-against movement. Slide G is slid upward, if necessary, until the aperture e is in alinement with the head, and said head is then thrust therethrough, the elastic fittingsnugly about the neck. By reversing the slide, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 6, the aperture e can be brought nearer the center of the .end of the box. Thisis advantageo us where very large fowls are placed in the device. After the fowl has been placed as above described a fumigator is put in the box and the lid closed. It will be seen that the fowl will not suffer from suffocation duringthe fumigating process and is securely held against struggling.
In the foregoing description we have shown the preferred form of our invention; but we do not limit ourselves thereto, as we are aware that modifications maybe made therein without departing from the spirit or sacrificing the advantages thereof, and We therefore reserve the right to make such changes as fairly fall within the scope of our invention.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we therefore'claim as new, and desire to secure by. Letters Patent, is
1. The combination with a receptacle having a slot in one end thereof; of an elastic covering for said slot having a head-receiving aperture therein.
2. The combination with a receptacle havslide in said slot; and an elastic covering for the slot in the slide, said covering having a head-receiving aperture.
5.. The combination with a receptacle; of holding strips slidably mounted therein, means for adjusting said strips at right angles to each other, a reversible, slotted slide mounted in a slot'in the receptacle, and an elastic covering to the slot in the slide, said covering having a head-receiving aperture.
In testimony whereof we affix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
