COMBINED POKER AN D LID LIFTER.
(Application filed July 18, 1901.) (No Model.) 1
r NITED STATES ATENT FFICE.
HARRY WASHBURN, OF OSOEOLA MILLS, PENNSYLVANIA.
COMBINED POKER AND LID-LIFTER.
SEECIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 698,161, dated April 22, 1902.
Application filed July 18,1901. serial No. 68,820. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY WAsHBURN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Osceola Mills, in the county of Clearfield and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Poker and Lid-Lifter; and I do declare the to be adjusted in an out-of-operative position at will and when not in use to assume a position Where it will not interfere with the use of the poker.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure lis a side elevation of the device, showing the lifter adjusted for use. Fig. 2 isa cross-section through the poker-rod and sleeve of the lifter, and Fig. 3 is a detailsectioual View showing the lifter held retracted by the spring-catch.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates a poker of ordinary construction, the same consisting ofa rod provided at one end with a suitable form of handle 2. Slidably mounted on the rod 1 is a sleeve 3, which is provided with a forwardly-projecting'lifting-blade 4, which is adapted to be inserted into the receivingopenings of the stove-lids for lifting and moving the same from place to place. The sleeve 3 is held'from rotating on' the rod 1 and guided to move in a determined path in any desired manner, but preferably by providing.
the rod and sleeve with cooperating angular or flattened faces 5 and 6, which prevent the sleeve from having any axial play. The outward movement of the sleeve and liftingblade is limited by a stop-pin 7, suitably secured to the outer end of the rod 1, said pin being so located as to arrest the movement of the sleeve 3 at such a point that the blade 4 will project slightly beyond the outer end of the rod 1 in position for insertion into the receiving-opening of the stove-lid. In order to adapt the device for holding the stove-lid securely, the outer end of the rod 1 is bev- .stove lifting device adjusted in position for use, from'which it will be seen that the rod and handle 2 of the poker are utilized as a handle or support for lifting the stove-lid and the poker maybe used the sleeve and blade are slid back to the position shown in Fig. 3 against the handle 2 and are retained in po sition by a curved spring-catch 9, consisting of a strip of spring metal having an opening to receive a pin 10 on the adjacent end of, the sleeve 3. This catch is curved or bent so as to form a finger-piece, which upon being depressed will release the pin 10 and allow the lifter to be adjusted to the position shown in Fig. l for use. I
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction, mode of operation, and advantages of the invention will be readily understood, and it will be seen that the invention provides a combination implement of the character described which is simple of construction, comparatively inexpensive of manufacture, and in which the stove lifting attachment may be readily and conveniently moved into and out of operative position at will.
Changes in the form, proportion, and minor details of construction may be made within the scope of the'invention without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a combined poker and stove-lid litter, the combination with the poker-rod and its handle, of a sliding sleeve mounted on said rod and held against axial movement thereon, said sleeve being provided with a stove liftlug-blade, a stop upon the rod to limit the outward movement of the sleeve, and a catch 11 pon the handle to hold the sleeve in retracted position, substantially as described.
2. In a combined poker and stove-lid lifter, the combination with a poker-rod provided at one end with a handle and having the under side of its opposite end beveled, a sleeve slidably mounted on the rod and held against axial movement thereon and provided with a stove lifting-blade and a pin, a stop upon the rod to limit the outward movement of the sleeve to hold the blade in proper relative position to the beveled surface of the rod, and a spring-catch upon the handle to engage said pin to hold the sleeve retracted, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
HARRY WASH BURN.
