IMPROVED DUMB-WAITBR.
TO ALL WI-IOM IT MAY GONCERN:
Be it knownthat I, T. B. BRYSON, of New Castle, in the county of Lawrence, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Dumb-Waitcrs; and I do hereby declare that the following is :i full, clear, and exact description thereof', which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specilication, in which- Figure 1 is a front view of my improved dumb-waiter, showing the waiter when lowered.
Figure 2, a side view of the same.

The nature of this invention consists in constructing aportable dumb-waiter, easily fitted 'in a dwellinghouse for opening up rthrough the ioor ofan upper roomover another room or cellar, without requiring n. closet to enclose it, or occupying space in the upper room permanently. My improved dumb-waiter is so-constructcd as to require only a suitable hole tobe cut in the floor of the upper room, through which the dumb-waiter can rise when necessary, while the top ofthe waiter shall fill the hole, and be level with the Hoor when it is lowered into a cellar or basement kitchen. It is formed of two light skeleton wooden frames, one of which its and slides up and down freely inside ofthe other, and is connected with a weight to raise it, and a springe-(itch to fasten it when up or down. t
A represents the floor of a cellar or basement room, and Bthe floor of a kitchen or room above; C C are side pieces of a rectangular or skeleton box-frame, set up between the upper and lower floors A B; and D D are the side pieces of a dumb-waiter frame, itted in the outer yframe pieces C C in such manner as to slide freely up and down, and run up through the floor B, as shown clearly in tig. 3. The dumb-waiter is provided with shelves a a in the usual way, and either the inside or outside frame may be enclosed with wire cloth or perforated ltin, or sheet zinc, so that it shall serve as a safe, when lowered into the cellar, for the protection oi' articles of food contained init. The dumb-waiter has a cord, b, fastened at one end to the bottompiece c, which cord passes over a sheave or pulley, d, fastened to the cap e of the outer frame, and has a weight, g, tied on the other end, for counterbalancing the dumb-waiter and raisinglit when free to run. On one of the side'pieces C is attached a spring-catch, for holding the dumb-waiter in place when raised or lowered. 7L is a vertical rod, the upper end of which passes through the upper iloor B a little way, and the lower end of therod is pivoted to an elbow or segment lever, 7c, one end of which passes through the outer frame, and'projects far enough on the inside to catch under the bottom of the dumb-waiter, when it is raised, and prevent it from falling, and catch over the top, when it is lowered, to prevent it from rising. The catch is held in place for this purpose by a spring, m,
'that bears against the lower end of the lever k, and by pressing it out throws the other end in. Now, when the waiter is below it is only necessary'to touch the upper end of the rod L with the foot and bear upon it to release the catch on the leverv 7c, and the dumb-waiter will then rise by the weight g. In order to quicken and facilitate the upward movement of the waiter afspiral spring, n, is fastened on the sillp of the outer frame, which bears up against the bottom of the waiter when it is down, and reacts upon it forcibly when it is released for rising into the upper room.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- `The arrangement of a dumb-waiter for passi-ng up through the loor of an upper room, and the spring-catch operated by the rod h, in combination with the weight g, and the spiral spring n, substantially as and for the purpose herein described T. B. BRYSON.
