UNITEDH'STATES PATENT-i OFFICE."
WILLIAM H. HAWKINS, OF SPRINGFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS.
STUB-HOLDER FOR CHECK-BOOKS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 697,483, dated April 15, 1902.
Application filed July 23,1901. Serial No- 69,451- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. HAWKINS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Springfield, in the county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Stub-Holder for Check-Books, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in stub-holders in which a spring fastened to the cover of the book holds the stubs thereon when the checks have been removed from the book; and the object of my improvement is to produce a compact and inexpensive stubholder that is attached to the book without the use of metallic appliances. I attain this object by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a plan view of the stub-holder attached to the check book and retaining stubs in position upon the book-cover. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the spring. Fig. 3 is a perspective view showing the cloth-reinforced side of the paper-board and for securing the spring to the book and its transverse surface grooves.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
The stub-holder A is an open frame nearly square in shape and constructed from a single spring-wire. It has a stub-engaging border a, and the borders 1) b extend laterally therefrom. The frame-terminals d d extend in parallelism inwardly from the bent-in parts g g in the open side of the frame and are connected with the borders b b by the parts 9 g. The ends 71 h of the frame-terminals d d are bent inward and on a line parallel with the stub-engaging border a, Figs. 1, 2.
The paper-board B is used to secure the holder A to the stub-containing book D. It is reinforced with the cloth K. Transverse surface grooves t t are formed in the side, to which the cloth K is fastened. Its width equals the length of the terminals d d, and
which are the only parts of said spring covered by it when fastened in position for use, as aforesaid, Figs. 1, 3.
The stub-holder A is placed upon the cover H of the book D in position to receive the stubs n 'n, beneath its border a as the checks c c c are removed therefrom. It is secured to the book D by means of the paper-board B, which receiving the frame-terminals d d in its grooves t tis cemented to the cover H. The ends h h of the terminalsdd bear against the edge S of the paper-board, thereby pre venting the terminals 01 (I being forced outward through the grooves 15 t, Fig. 1, 2, 3.
The parts g g are of sufficient length to preserve the resilient properties of the spring and insure its durability. The length of the terminals d d depends upon the stiffness of the wire from which the spring is formed, a very stiff spring requiring longer terminals and a broader fastener B than does one of moderate resistance. 7
' What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is'-'- A stub-holder constructed from spring-wire comprising an open frame having a stub-en 7o gaging border, borders .extending laterally from the stub-engaging border, frame-terminals opposite the stub-engaging border extending in parallelism inwardly the ends of the frame-terminals being bent, parts of the frame connecting the borders extending laterally from the stub-engaging border with the frame-terminals, means securing the frame to a book-cover consisting of a paper or like board having transverse surface grooves to receive the frame-terminals, said board being cemented to the book-cover, thereby firmly uniting said frame and cover, substantially as described.
