F. CORBIN, OF NEW BRITAIN, CONNECTICUT, A CORPORATION OF CON- NECTICUT.
WIN DOW STO P-ADJ USTI NG DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent NO. 697,139, dated April 8, 1902.
Application filed March 5, 1902.
To aZZ whom it Duty cancer/2 Be it known that I, WILBUR F. GILBERT, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Britain, in the county of Hartford, State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Window-Stop-AdjustingDevices,of which the followingis a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to devices to be used in connection with window-stops and by the use of which the said stop may be adjusted toward or away from the window-sash to afford the proper holding-bearing.
Among the objects of my invention are to provide an adjusting device which shall be simple and efiective in operation, strong and durable in construction.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a plan view of my improved window-stop-adjusting device as it appears inserted in a portion of a window-stop. Fig. 2 is a section, partly in elevation, of the same.
A is the main body, formed of sheet metal. The body A is preferably slightly tapered in form and provided with a flange Ct at its up per edge. This body portion A, I shall term herein the thimble.
B is an inner crown formed by turning up the lower portion of the thimble, so that said crown projects upwardly within said thimble.
The thimble A and the inner crown B are integrally united at the lower end of the adjusting device, so as to form asmooth round bearing, thus avoiding any rough cutting edge, such as might mar or injure the woodwork. The top of the crown is practically flat and is also formed integrally. The integral formation of the thimble, the crown, and the top of said crown provide compound corrugations or double bends which impart great strength and rigidity to the finished article, permitting the employment of light material without sacrificing strength or durability. The employment of light material has the advantage of permitting the economical production of the article. The side wall of the inner crown is substantially vertical, although it may have a very slight taper. This substantially vertical wall resists the endwise thrust of the holdingscrew, such as is commonly used with window-stop-adj usting devices, thus preventing the crushing down of the top Serial No. 96,798. (No model.)
of said crown. In the top of the crown an opening is provided, preferably in the form of a slot. This opening provides a passage for the screw commonly employed, and therefore not necessary to illustrate. The adj usting device is placed in a suitable hole in the window-stop E, so that the screw-slot will stand transversely of the length of said stop. A round-head screw is usually employed, so that the flat under side of the head will take a broad bearing on the top of the crown.
The stop is applied to the window-casing in the usual way, and the said stop may be adj usted properly with respect to the windowsash, and then the screw may be set down, holding it effectively in place. In the particular construction it will be observed that the top of the crown is slightly below the top of the thimble, thus permitting the depresiion of the screw-head. This is the preferred orm.
WVhat I claim is- 1. A window-stop-adjusting device comprising a thimble, a crown within said thimble said crown and thimble being integrally united at the lower portion of said device, an enlarged opening in the top of said crown.
2. A window-stop-adjusting device comprising, a thimble, a crown within said thimble said crown and thimble being integrally united at the lower end of said device, an integral top on said crown, an enlarged opening therein.
3. In a window-stop-adjusting device, a thimble, a crown within said thimble said crown and thimble being united integrally at the lower end of said device the top of said crown being intermediate the length of said device and a slot in the top of said crown.
4. A window-stop-adjusting device comprising, a thimble, an annular flange at the upper edge thereof, a crown within said thim= ble said crown being united with said thimble at the lower edge of said device, a top on said crown, an elongated opening or slot in said crown.
Signed at New Britain, Connecticut, this 1st day of March, 1902. I
WILBUR F. GILBERT.
