U ITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES A. REED, OF PAYNE, OHIO.
BU RlAL-VAU LT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 696,192, dated-March 25, 1902. Application filed October 31,1901. Serial No. 80,585. (No'modeL) To aZZ whont it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES A. REED, a citizen of the United States, residing at Payne, in the county of Paulding and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Burial-Vaults, of which the following is -a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in burial vaults or cases; and the object of my invention is the provision of a vault or case which can be easily and perfectly sealed, so as to be absolutely proof against influence of weather or decay, and which will provide a perfect protection for the casket.
Another object of my invention is the provision of a vault which will be capable of production at a comparatively low price, which can be easily moved when desired, and which will possess great strength and durability.
With these objects in view my invention consists of a burial-vault embodying novel features of construction and combination of parts, substantially'as' disclosed herein.
Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my vault with the lid or cover in place. Fig. 2 represents a sectional view through the complete vault, and 'Fig. 3 represents a detail view of the base or supporting-frame.
My vault or case is composed of the base or supporting-frame A, composed of strips of wood secured rigidly together by rods Band forming the chambers or recesses C in the frame to receive the composition of which the body D is composed.
The bodyD is composed entirely of cement and sand, supported and secured upon the base or frame, and at the upper portion the body is formed with the flange E, which provides the channel or seat F for the lid or cover G, which lid is provided with handles H, which are secured in the lid by molding the cement around them.
It will thus be seen that I provide a vault whichcan be perfectly sealed and which can be easily moved from place to place without fear or damage, as the heavy wooden support Will-permit moving of the vault on rollers. It will also be seen that the vault will form a perfect protection for the casket and will be imperishable, and thus prove a practical vault.
I claim A burial-vault composed of the body formed with the channel or seat, the lid fitting in said channel and formed with handles, and
the wooden base upon which the body is supported and secured composed of a series of longitudinal and transverse pieces bolted together.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES A. REED. Witnesses:
