PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN ALBERT ZEINWOLDT, OF BODAFORS, SWEDEN.
PLATFORM ROCKING-CHAIR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 695,703, dated March 18, 1902. Application filed June 14, 1901. Serial No. 64,560. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN. ALBERT ZEIN- WOLDT, a subject of the King of Sweden and Norway, residing at Bodafors, Sandsjo, Sweden, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rocking-Chairs, of which the following is a specification.
The object of the invention is to provide a rocking-chair capable of rocking freely and naturally, but restrained from passing a certain limit; and it consists in the construction and combinations hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure l is a side elevation of a rocking-chair and accessories embodying my invention. Fig. '2 is a top plan View of the stool orbase upon which the chair proper rests and rocks, and Fig. 3. is an enlarged detail illustrating certain modes of attaching flexible metallic bands or straps employed in connection with the said base and the rockers of the chair.
In carrying out the invention I secure to the rockers 1 and lateral bars of the base 2 flexible bars or bands of steel or other elastic material, two such bands, 3 and 4, being applied to each rocker at opposite ends thereof and thence carried down and underneath the rocker and-secured tothe ends of the corresponding lateral bars of the base farthest removed from the points of their attachment to said rockers. The ends of said bands may be bent at right angles and formed into brads or tacks ,9, as indicated in Figs. 1 and 2, to be driven into the rockers and base, and thereby secure them, or after being bent to a right angle be passed through holes in the parts to which they are to be secured and screwthreaded at their extremities to receive nuts as indicated in the rocker portion of said figme, and there receive nuts entering countersinks in said ends, where they may be con cealed by'stoppers of wood, brass, or other suitable material.
In order to guide the chair in the rocking motion and also that its rockers may contact directly with and rock upon the broad flat upper surface of thelateral bars of the base instead of upon the elastic bands, said bars, as well as the rockers, are longitudinally grooved or fluted, as at 5, 6, 7, and 8, to receive the bands as the chair rocks back and forth.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a rocking-chair the combination with the longitudinally-channeled rockers and longitudinally-channeled lateral bars of the base, of the flexible and elastic bands attached to the opposite ends of each rocker and the reverse ends of each lateral base-bar, and arranged to close into said channels as the chair is rocked, so that the rockers may come into working contact with the surface of saidbasebars and be guided by the interlocking of said bands with the grooves.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN ALBERT ZEINWOLDT.'
