EDYVIN COULSON HEGAN, OF LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY.
COlVi POSiTE MATERIAL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 695,309, dated March 1 1, 1902. Application filed June 22, 1901 Scrial No. 65,606- (No specimens.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDWIN OoULsoN HE- GAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Louisville, in the county of Jefferson and State of Kentucky, have invented a new and Improved Composite Material, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved composite material which is simple and dnrablein construction, exceedingly light but structurally very strong to resist ordinarystrains, and not liable to lose its shape, to check, or to crack, thecomposite material being especially adapted for forming columns for use in making furniture and the like.
The invention consists of novel features and parts and combinations of the same, as will be fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claims.
A practical embodiment of my invention is represented in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of referenceindicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a perspective View of the improvement with part broken out. Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the same; and Fig. 3 is a like view of the same, showing a different shape.
The composite material consists, essentially, of the sheets orlayers A and B, of veneer, and the coating 0, applied to the face of one of the sheets, made of a hard drying substance, such as gypsum.
The sheets or layers A and B are cemented or glued together, with the grain of the wood running either parallel or crosswise, and the united layers or sheets are bent to a given form to any desired shape, either concave, convex, serpentine, or into a tubular orother shape.
The coating 0 is appliedto the face of one of the sheets, preferably the innermost, and while in a liquid state, which when hardening imparts strength to the veneer sheets or layers to hold the wood in the shape desired, at the same time adhering firmly to the wood.
In case the composite material is bent into tubular form, as illustrated in the drawings, and is used for columns in the manufacture of furniture, mantels, and the like, then plugs D, preferably of wood, are secured in the ends of the tube, and each plug is formed with a central dowel-pin D for fastening the column in place on the piece of furniture, the mantel, or other article. The column thus produced is extremely light, exceedingly strong and durable, and is not liable to check or crack, being far superior to the veneered columns as heretofore made, and consisting of a solid turned wooden core covered with veneer, in which the core is liable to shrink and leave the veneer loose around the core.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. As a new article of manufacture, a composite material consisting of sheets of veneer cemented together, and a coating of gypsum, as set forth.
2. As an article of manufacture, a composite material comprising sheets of veneer disposed concentrically in the general form of a hollow cylinder and secured together, the inner sheet being coated with gypsum and provided with plugs in contact with said gypsum for closing the ends of said cylinder.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
EDWIN OOULSON I-IEGAN.
