Be it known that I, WILLIAM E. Coran, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Homestead, in the county ofAllegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and use-, ful Improvements in Hardened Railroads the rails work up and down, and'the ends get out of line with each other. This movement of the rails results in the battering up of the ends and the rounding off of the corners thereof, thereby destroying the rail, which has to be discarded long before the body is worn out. It is with the purpose of preventing the ready battering of the ends of the rail, and thereby prolonging the lives of the same, that my invention was made.
In the accompanying drawings I have, in order to make myinvention fully understood, selected for illustration a'simple form of apparatus by which my objects can readily be carriedinto eect, in which- Figure l is an end View of a table with rails thereon and the sprays in position, together with their supply-pipes. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a street-railway rail.

The numeral l designates a horizontal table long enough to accommodate rails 2 of standard length. An abutment 2a is secured to one end of the table and servesto limit the movement of the rails and to bring their ends Located at each end of the table l and near one side thereof is a spray 3,'having a plurality of perforations 3 therein. The spray 3 is designed to spray the ends of several rails at once. A supply-pipe et of the spray 3 is connected to a tank 5 for containing a mixture for casehardening. A valve 6 regulates the Vilow of liquid to the spray. A Vtrough 7 is set on the door and located beneath'the spray in order tocatch and save the duid from the tank 5. A steam-pipe 8, directed toward the trough, serves to quench the fire in case combustible ingredients are used in the case-hardening mixture. A pump 9, provided with connections 10 and ll, returns the duid to the tank 5. Vhile any case-hardening mixture will answer, I prefer to use asolution comprising pitch and yellow prussiate of potash. This mixture m ust be heated at first, after which it will be kept hot by the heat of the rails.

two sprays 12, of about twice the length of the spray 3. Pipes 13, connected to some source of water-supply, serve to feed the spray l2.
In operation the rails are passed through the finishing-rolls and are then sawed oif and placed on the table 1'. They are rst placed beneath the sprays 3 and the case-hardening fluid turned on both ends thereof, after which they are left lying until the mixture has thor-A oughly burned on. Having thus described my invention, what I vclaim as new, and wish to secure by Letters Patent, is
1.- A new article of manufacture, a steel rail A having its ends only hardened.
