Description

E. M. NARAMORE.
Thin-Coupling No. 69,469 Patented Oct. 1, 1867.

E. M. NARAMORE, OF NORTH UNDERHILL, VERMONT, ASSIG NOR TO HIM- SELF AND W. M. NARAMORE, OF SAME PLACE.
Letters l atmzt .No. 69,469, dated October 1, 1867.
IMPROVEMENT IN THILL-GOUPLING.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, E. M. NARAMORE, of North Underhill, in the county of Chittenden, and State of Vermont, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Thill-Coupling; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
The object of this invention is to provide a wagon-thill and pole-coupling'that may be readily coupled and uncoupled, and firmly and securely held in place; and the invention consists in attaching a bed-piece to the axle or forward part of the wagon which shall contain a recess for the knuckle of the pole or thills, and in fastening the same by a spring-catch, as I will proceed to describe.
Figure 1 is a view of the coupling partly in section, as through the line was of fig. 2.
Figure 2 is a cross-section through the line y 3 of fig. 3.
Figure 3 is a longitudinal section through the line z 2 of fig. 2.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A is the bed-piece; B is the knuckle which is attached to the thill or pole of the wagon; C is the springcatch by which the knuckle is held in place. The knuckle P has square ends, as seen in fig. 1, and the bedpiece is recessed out for the square part, as seen in the section, fig. 2. The knuckle is formed of three pieces, (1,6, and c, which are united together by a screw, d, which is attached to a, as seen in the drawing. The square portions a and e have heads outside of the bed, as seen in fig. '2. The part I) which is attached to the pole is countersunk, as seen in the drawing, and the parts a and e are made conical, to fit the part b, as seen. When the parts are attached together by the screw d, the knuckle thus formed is dropped into the recess in the bedpiece, as seen in fig.- 2. To secure it firmly in place the spring-catch (l is provided. This catch is attached to the bed-piece by a broad link, f, which passes around rods or pins The forward portion of this catch-is latched to the bed, as seen in the drawing, andheld in that position by the spring J, which bears against the link f with a constant pressure, and thereby keeps the catch in place, as seen in figs. 1 and 3. n is a thumbpiece for drawing back the catch when the thills 0r pole are to be detached.
The construction and operation will be readily understood from the drawing.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The bed-piecc A, constructed substantially as described, for the purposes set forth.
2. The knuckle 13, formed of the parts a I] c, in combination with the bed-piece, substantially as described.
3. In combination with the bed A and knuckle I3, I claim the spring-catch G, with its link and spring J, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
E. Mi NARAMORE.
