IMPROVEMENT 1N Donuts-Tissus.A
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CIONCERNY:
Be it, known that I., JACOB B. HOUGH, of Lebanon, in theiconnty of Warren, -in the State of Ohio, have vinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Double-Trees ;A and do hereby declare that'the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to' the' accompanying drawings, und. to the lettersof `reference marked thereon.
The'drawing represents n top or plain view'ot` my improved double-tree as used upon n common wagon-tongue. The nature of myV invention consi-sts in theurrangementof o curvcdfulcrum-block und gude-rods, or their equivalents, in combination with n. double-tree, in such-a manner as to vary the pointof draught, forithe purpose and in the manner hereinafter described; also in the use of u stay-block in-com'binaticn with the compensating double-tree and fulcrum block, all of which will be fully described in this specification. l
. To enable others to' make and use my invention, I 'will proceed to describe its construction und operation I construct my'dou'bletree in the usual forni, :is indicated in the drawing' by the letter D, and place it centrally upon the tongue und houndsiA B C. In the upper -side of the double-tree D there are two staples inserted, as seen at b b. vE is the fulor'um-block, formed, as indicated in the drawing, with its rear fece.A sgoinst which the front edg'eotl` the double-treeworks, curved in the nrc of` s circle. F is the stayblock, and is of the sume thickness of the double-treeond the.. fulcrum-bloclglL- end thesetmoLhlocks aire irmly seen-red by bolts-tothetongne and. hounds. The double-tree is held in place by the curved rods a a, which are securely faistened to the blocks E end-.1?, and pass through the staples b b, as shown in thedrcwing. Flach end of doubletree. D'
is provided with u. single-tree in the usual manner, for attac-hing the horses to the wegen pr carriage.'
Frontv the foregoing description it will be understood thct in using my improved doubie-trecs the changing point of draught will always correspond with the difference in pou/eruppliedto the ends otl the double-tree. Ir. every instance and condition the double-tree will adjust itselt` upon the fulcrum-block in such a. manner as to favor the less powerful horse, because, as the more powerful of the two will'lre'p in'ndvanc'e of the other, the
- point of drought will correspondingly.lapprouch and remain vin nearer'prorrimity .tol the most advonc'ed'of the animals'. AIn other words, the foremost horse will necessarily have the short end ot' the lever, while the rearmost will-draw from the longer end. In the event of the entire suspension of power uto'ne endet' the'duble-trec, then the. stoy-block will Operate to check and hold the double-tree from oscillating to any considerable ex .teut, serving the purpose 'of stay-chains, which are generally required t'or the sume purpose. There nreother obvious advantages to be derived from the use of my invention, it being well adapted for breaking young animals to work.. Its use is not limited to the'vfvugonlor c arrige, but may' be applied to a. long'clevis for the ploughn the same manner that the parts re attached to the wagon. My improveddouble-trees nre not only simple in construction, but much cheaper than any device of the ltind thuthnmbeen introduced to my observation. I
Hoving now fully described the construction undl manner of using my ix'ivention, what I claim, nnddesi're to secure by Letters Patent, is -v v -1 v y 1. flho combination of the double-tree D lwith the fulcrum-,block'E and guides -a a, constructed, arranged, and'A operating .in the manner 'and for the purpose described; v A I 2. I claim the stay-block F, in-combination WiththeV compensating doubletree and its'fulcrnm-block, arranged to operate conjointly withthe guide-rods a substantially as and 'for the purpose set forth.A In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 9th day of December, A. D. 1865'.
