TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, E. N. DODGE, of Plninview, in the county of Wabashu, and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Whiflio-Trees, and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same. reference being had to the accompanying draw ngs. and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
In the annexed drawings, marking part of this specification, A represents the cross-liar, which unites the two shafts of ti vehicle, and to which the WhifliO-U'OO is usually attached. ,P ivo.ted near the ends of this cross-bar are two drought-rods B B, which are provided on their outer endsn'ith the usual cntchesfor holding the tugs. The rear ends of these rods B B are made near-115 disk-shaped, and are provided with teeth, as shown, which gear into the teeth of a sliding bar C. The liars Q Cure provided with arms EVE, and these arms are connected together by means of a rod, D. This rod may be secured permanently to one of the arms, and pass through an opening in the'other, and have a hut passed over a thread upon its end to regulate the set of the rods 13 B. a
. represents the nut upon the end of the rod D. By shortening the rod D in screwing up the nut a, the arms B B are thrown back at their outer ends, and the traces are thus made shorter, or by lengthening the red the traces are lengthened. It will 'readily be seen that when thejtrnces are fastened to the ends of the rods B '13, they have the see-saw motion incident to t'ruces from the motion of the horses shoulders. With this arrangement of devices the ordinary whifiie-t-ree may he dispensed with, and the cross-hair connecting the shafts be made to answer instead. 7
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- The arrangement of the rods B B, the hairs C C, and the connecting-rod D, constructed and used as and for the purpose herein specified. Y
As evidence that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two witnesses.
I E. N. DODGE.
