Be it known that I, GEORGE W. WASHBURN, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of the city of New York, in the State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Jewelry-Securers, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to devices for preventing the abstraction or accidental escape of scarf-pins, ear-studs, and like articles of jewelry; and its object is to so construct a simple and compact fastening or securer that itwillnot only coact with smooth wire,but will adjust itself to wire of somewhat widely differing sizes and will be automatic in fastening and easily manipulated.

The improved securer in which the present invention consists is thus adapted to be used in connection with scarf-pins of different sizes or with several articles of jewelry with out being fitted to the pin or wire of each.

A sheet of drawings accompanies this specification as part thereof.

Figure 1 is a side view of the improved securer, representing it as applied to a scarfpin. Fig. 2 represents a magnified section through the frame of the securer in a plane parallel to its side seen in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a top view projected from Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 is a plan View of the spring-tongue and tonguedepressor detached. Fig. 5 is a side View showing certain modifications hereinafter de scribed.

Like letters and numbers refer to like parts in all the figures.

The improved securer comprises a frame A, of gold, silver, aluminium, or anysuitable metal or alloy, a spring-tongue B, preferably and conveniently ofspring-stee1,andatonguedepressor O, which may be conveniently of the same material as the frame.

The frame A has parallel sides, united with each other at a closed and rounded edge 1, in line with which an entrance-cup 2 and a lower guide 3 are formed on or attached to the frame to complete a sheath for the pin-tongue P, Fig. 1, of a scarf-pin or like pin-tongues or stems on other articles of jewelry.

The opposite (right) edge of the frame A is open, and its sides are provided with holes 4 near this edge to admit a pair of lugs 5 on tho spring-tongue B, by which it is held in place. In assembling the pieces the sides of the frame are spread apart to admit the lugs 5. The sides of the frame A are then connected with each other near the holes 4by a rivet 6, which also forms a fulcrum for the spring-tongue B.

Apart from the lugs 5 the spring-tongue B has parallel sides, and its end opposed to the inner wall of the closed edge 1 terminates in a biting edge.

When the secnrer is applied to a pin-tongue P, as in Fig. 1, the spring-tongue B yields readily to admit the same and automatically fastens it by pressing its biting edge 7 against the pin-tongue and the latter against said inner wall of the closed edge of the securer. Such spring-tongues vary considerably in diameter, as illustrated by the dotted circles at P in Fig. 3; but owing to its construction, as above, theimproved securer is readily adapted to fasten equally Well all sizes.

The tongue-depressor O is slotted to receive the biting end of the spring-tongue B, and the frame A is provided with a pair of guideslots 8, through which the ends of the depressor protrude. In assembling the pieces the tongue-depressor O is introduced simultaneously with the spring-tongue B,and when the biting end of the spring-tongue is passed through the depressor and the rivet 6 is introduced the depressor is securely held in place without being soldered to the springtongue.

The protuding ends of the tongue-depressor O and opposing lugs 9, formed on or attached to the sides of the frame A, are provided with notches 10, Figs. 3 and 4, to facilitate grasping them at either side of the securer between the nails of a finger and a thumb to retract the spring-tongue and release the scarfpin or other article of jewelry.

The bar 0 serves not only, in combination with the opposing lugs 9, to depress or retract the spring-tongue, but, in combination with the guide-slots 8, to resist the forcible withdrawal of the pin-tongue P or its equivalent.

The holes 4 may be snugly fitted to the lugs 5, if preferred, as at 4. in Fig. 5. A screw 6, Fig. 5, may take the place of the rivet G. A chain D, Fig. 5, to prevent the loss of the securer, may be attached,and other like modifications will suggest themselves to those skilled in the art.

Having thus described said improvement, I claim as my invention and desire to patent under this specification- 1. A securer for automatically fastening a scarf-pin or other article of jewelry having a pin-tongue or the like, such securer comprising a frame having one edge closed and provided with an entrance-cup in line with said edge, and having sides parallel with each other provided with holes near the opposite edge, a spring-tongue having lugs within said holes, and having a biting end opposed to the inner Wall of said closed edge of the frame, a fulcrum beneath said spring-tongue near said lugs, and means for retracting the springtongue.

2. The combination, in a securer for scarfpins and like articles of jewelry, of a frame closed at one edge and having sides, parallel with each other, provided with holes near its opposite edge and slotted at an intermediate point, aspring-tongue having lugs Within said holes and having a biting end opposed to the inner wallof said closed edge of the frame, and a slotted bar through which said biting end of the spring-tongue extends, and which is guided by the slots in the sides of the frame.

3. The combination, in a securer for scarfpins and like articles of jewelry, of a frame closed at one edge and having sides, parallel with each other, provided with holes near its GEO. WV. WASIIBURN.
