P. L. ROSS.
CLASP.
No. 342,638. Patented 'May25, 1886.
UNITED STATES PERRY L. ROSS, OF BRADFORD, PENNSYLVANIA.
CLASP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 342,638, dated May 25, 1886,
Application filed March 29, 1886.
To all whmn it may concern.-
Be it known that I, PERRY L. Ross, of Brad ford, in the county of McKean and State of Pennslyvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clasps; and I do hereby declare the followingto be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in clasps; and it consists in the combination of a pivoted jaw, which has a button formed upon its end, in combination with a second jaw pivoted thereon, and carrying with it a slide for compressing aportion of the garment against the inner side of the button, and a loop for catching over the garment and press ing it down over the top and against the outer side of the button, as will be described hereinafter.
The object of my invention is to provide a clasp for suspending stockings, drawers, childrens underwear, and other portions of the garments, and which is provided with a blind button and devices which clasp the garment against opposite sides of the button, so that it is impossible for the clasp to work loose.
Figure l is aside elevation showing the parts closed. Fig. 2 is a perspective showing the parts open.
A represents the lower or innerjaw, which is bent upward at its center, in the manner shown, for the purpose of allowing the pivot B of the upper jaw, O, to pass through it. Upon one end of this jaw A is formed a handle and upon the other end is secured the blind button D. This button may either be of the shape here shown or any other that may be preferred, and over which the portion of the garment which is to be connected to the clasp is passed.
The jaw C is provided with a handle at its outer end, but its inner end projects but a short distance beyond the pivot B. This short end forms a cam or lever for moving the slide G and the loop H in relation to the button. The slide G is recessed at its free end, as
shown, so as to clasp the garment against the inner side of the button, while the loop II passes down over the top of the button and pulls the garment against the shank of the button upon the opposite side from the slide G. Both the slide G and the loop H being connected to this short-er end of the jaw 0, they are both moved at once; but being placed upon opposite sides of the pivot B they are moved in opposite directions in relation to the button, when the jaw O has its handle pressed downward toward the handle of the jaw A. Y
In order to operate the clasp, the portion of the garmentmust first be passed over thetop of the button. The slide G is then pressed downward, so as to catch over that portion of the garment which is upon the inner side of the button, and the loop H is passed down over the top of the button. so as to press the garment down around it. WVhen the jaw G is then closed, as shown in Fig. 1, the slide and loop clamp the garment from opposite sides of the button, so as to hold it securely. In practice, the slide and loop are both closed downward together over the garment and the button, and then the jaw O is pressed downward at its outer end. clasped from opposite sides around the shank of the button, it is impo sible for the garment to become detached from the clasped unless it is turned loose. v
Having thus described my invention, I claim In a clasp, the combination of the jaw A, provided with a blind button upon one end, with a second jaw, O, pivoted to the one A, and provided at its short end with both a slide and a loop, the slide and loop being made to move in opposite directions when the jaw O is closed for the purpose of clamping the article of clothing against opposite sides of the button, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
