Description

iUrvTTn STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MARY B. I-IUGHEN, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
BROOIVI ATTACHMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N o. 693,710, dated February 18, 1902.
Application filed June 19, 1901. Serial No. 65,163. (No model.) l
To all whom, t may concern:
Be it known that I, MARY B. HUGHEN, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Broom Attachments, of which the following is a speciiication.
The main object of my invention is to provide a simple device for securing a cloth over the brush part ofa broom. I accomplish this object by the device shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of a device constructed according to my invention. Fig. 2 is a side view of a broom, showing the device attached and illustrating the manner in which the cloth is secured.
In the form shown my invention is constructed as follows: A ring or wire 1 of a diameter slightly larger than the diameter Aof the part of the broom where it is secured to the handle has secured thereto at opposite sides the forked members 2 and 3. These members are preferably secured to the ring by means of hinge-pieces 1, so that their ends may be freely moved toward or away from each other. The members 2and 3 are slightly offset at 5, the point at which the hingepieces 4 are attached, to prevent said hingepieces from slipping along said members. The member 2 has its ends bent to form hooks 6 and the ends of the member 3 are bent to form the eyes 7. Each of the members 2 and 3 has its arms connected near/their ends by a cross-bar S, which is preferably made of sheet metal bentto a channel-section and having on its projecting anges the teeth 9. The cross-bars 8 are applied to the members 2 and 3 in such manner that the teeth will project inwardly or toward the broom when the device is applied, as shown in Fig. 2. A piece of open-link chain l0 is secured to each of the eyes 7 and is of such size that the hooks 6 may be inserted into the links, as shown in Fig. l. A section of the coil-spring 11 is inserted between two of the links of each of the chains l0, said springs and chains together forming an extensible resilient tie between the eye 7 and the hooks 6.
The operation of my device is as follows:
The ring l is passed over the handle of the broom and over the part 12 until stopped by the shoulder 13, the members 2 and 3 being disposed on opposite faces of the broom. A cloth 14: is wrapped around the end of the broom, its ends being gathered and drawn under the toothed bars 8. The chains lO are now secured to the hooks 6, causing the crossbars 8 to be drawn toward each other and sccurely clamping the cloth in position.
It will be seen that numerous details of the device shown may be altered without departing from the spirit of my invention. I therefore do not confine myself to such details except as hereinafter limited in the claims.
Vhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. A broom attachment comprising a pair.
of clamp members hinged together, means for attaching said members to opposite sides of a broom, a hook secured to one of said members, and a chain secured to the other mem ber adapted to engage said hook and thereby control the relative distance between said members.
2. A broom attachment comprising a ring, a pair of forked members hinged at opposite points of said ring, each of said members having a toothed bar connecting its arms near their extremities, a loop or eye at the end of each of the arms of one of said members, a hook at the end of each of the arms of the other member, and a chain secured to each of said eyes and having links of a size suitable to receive said hooks.
3. A broom attachment comprising a ring, a pair of forked members hinged at opposite points of said ring, each of said members having a toothed bar connecting its arms near their extremities, a loop or eye at the end of each of the arms of one of said members, a hook at the end of each of the arms of the other member, and a chain secured to each of said eyes and having links of a size suitable to receive said hooks, each of said chains having a spring connecting two of its links.
4t. A broom attachment comprising a ring, a pair of clamp members hinged at opposite points of said. ring, each of said members having a toothed bar at its end, and an extensible tie connecting each of the extremities of one of said bars with the oorrespondingextremity of the other bar.
5. A broom attachment comprising a pair of clamp members hinged together at their upper ends, means at said upper ends for attaching said members to opposite sides of a, broom, each of said members having at its lower end a toothed bar, and an extensible tie connecting each of the extremities of one of said bars with the corresponding extrem- 1o ity of the other bar.
Signed at Chicago this 17th day of June,
MARY B. l-IUGHEN.
