CHARLES "V. ED'WARDS, OF ST. THOMAS, ENGLAND.
MUSHCAL SKlPPlNG-ROPE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 693,693, dated February l8, 1902. Application filed October 21, 1901. Serial No. 79,396. (No model.)
To aZZ whom, t't may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES W. EDWARDS, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at St. Thomas, Swansea, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Musical Skipping-Ropes; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to a musical skipping-rope.
The object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which shall be simple of construction, durable in use, comparatively inexpensive of production, and which will afford considerable amusement for the young folks.
WVith this and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, which will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of one handle of the skipping-rope, a portion of the rope, and the music-box attached to said handle and said rope. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the opposite handle of said rope. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional View through one handle of the skipping-rope and through the music-box. Fig. 4 is a sectional view through one of the handles, showing the manner of fastening the end of the skipping-rope thereto. Fig. 5 is a sectional view through the music-box, taken at right angles to Fig. 3; and Fig. 6 is a detail view of the fastening for connecting the end of the skipping-rope to the handle.
Referring to the drawings, 1 and 2 denote the handles of a skipping-rope, and 3 the rope itself, which has its ends connected to said handle in a swiveled fashion, preferably but not necessarily by a device shown in detail in Fig. 6, which consists of a rod or wire made in the shape of the figure 8, one loop thereof engaging a groove 4, formed in the end of the handle, and the other loop affording attachment for the end of the ski pping-rope. Any other means, however, may be employed for attaching the ends of the rope to the handles, so that the same may slip or slide around the handle in the act of turning the rope in jumpmg.
5 denotes the casing of the music-box, 6
the barrel, and 7 the comb. These parts may be of any well-known or approved construction.
8 denotes a shaft, one end of which is attached to the handle 1 in any suitable manner, and the other end of which is journaled in bearings 9 and 10, located within said runsic-box. This shaft is provided or formed with a worm 12, which is adapted to engage a worm-wheel 13 of the barrel.
1% denotes an eye connected to the musicboX, through which one end of the rope 3 passes. However, any other form of connection between the box and rope may be provided without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In operation the handles 1 and 2 being grasped, the rope is manipulatedin the usual manner. The movement of the rope is imparted to the m usic-box, which, rotating upon its axis, (which is the shaft 8,) is caused, through the worm and worm-wheel, to rotate the barrel 0 against the comb '7, and thus produce a pleasant sound.
From theforegoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction, mode of operation, and advantages of my invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion, and details of construction may be made within the scope of the invention without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Pat ent, is-
The combination with the handle of a skip ping-rope provided with an annular groove near one end, a rope, a ring attached to one end of the rope and engaging said groove;- of a shaft carried by said handle and provided with a gear, a music-box journaled on said shaft and having its rotary barrel provided ice with a meshing gear, and a guide-eye carried by said music-box through which the rope passes, substantially in the manner described.-
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing wit- 1'65 DGSSGS.
