SWIV Ell-JOINT- Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 30, 1912.
Application filed July 23, 1910. Serial No. 573,503.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Fonnns'r G. HAYEs, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Sharon, in the county of Mercer and S1 ate of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved SwivelJoint, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
An objectof the invention is to provide a swivel joint for use on devices where it is desired to revolve the device or a portion thereof, the said revolving movement being substantially controlled by the operator. To obtain the desired result, use is made of a body provided with a cap, and means 0 the body for revolving the same.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings constituting a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views, and in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of my invention; Fig. 2 is a sectional view, taken on the line 22 of Fig. l and looking in the direction of the arrow; and Fig. 3 is a side elevation of one member of my invention.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, I employ a body 10 having a passage 11 therein, with one end of the passage preferably enlarged into a chamber 12. A cap 13 screw-threadedly engages the body 10, and a thimble 141;, having a flange 15, is extended through the cap 13 into the chamber 12. A washer 17 is disposed intermediate the thimble flange 15 and the cap 13, and a packing 18 is disposed adjacent and engaging the washer 17,- thus insuring a water-tight joint at this point. Secured to the body 10 is asheave 19 having a groove 20 interposed intermediate peripherally-em tending flanges 21. Flexible members such as cords or ropes 22 are secured to the sheave 19 and adapted to entwine the same, being disposed in the groove 20, so that when it is desired to revolve the body 10, thus also revolving the cap 13, a pull on either of the ropes 22 will cause the body to turn.
In the particular construction shown in the drawings, the device shown is adapted foriuse on a spraying device, the ends 23 and 24L being adapted to be connected with suitable supply and exhaust means on the spraying device.
-It will be understood that I do not limit myself to the particular construction shown and that the scope of my invention is defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A swivel joint, comprising a rcvoluble body provided with a passage, a cap engaging the body and mounted to turn therewith, a sheave integrally formed on the body, and flexible means engaging the sheave to revolve the body when the means are operated.
2. A swivel joint, comprising a revoluble body provided with a passage having an enlarged end, a cap screw-threadedly engaging the body and mounted to turn therewith, a thimble extending through the cap into the said enlarged end of the passage, a sheave integrally formed on the body, and flexible means engaging the sheave to revolve the body when the means are operated.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
FORREST G. HAYES.
Witnesses:
