Be it known that I, CHARLES F. S'rnnir, a

citizen of the United States of America', and

a resident of Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have inventedl .lowing is a specification.

The object of my invention is a combined dresser'and bed in which vthe bed may belowered readily into place for use and may be folded into a compact form, which may be swung as readily into the case, so that the whole assumes the proportions and the ornamental appearance of a dresser', in which is a compartment which at all times'remains stationary for containing wearing-apparel and whose door when opened before the front is swung down is a shelf convenient'forholdin g collars, neckties, dac., for one `dressing and when the front is Adown is a brace to the legs of the bed. 4

Referring to the drawings, in which like parts are indicated by similar reference-letters wherever they occur throughout the various views, Figure l is a front elevation of a combination bed and dresser embodying my invention in the form it assumes when completely closed. Fig. 2 is a transversecentral vertical sectional view of the same with the shelf-door of the stationary cornpartment opened, the lmattress-frame being shown folded and the mattress removed. to expose the hinges of the frame. closed. To the longitudinal edge of the recess is hinged a shelf-,door b4, so that in its closed position, as shownin Fig. l, its exterior face standsiiush'with-the exterior face of the front piece. At the inner `edges of arms b and b' are hinged pieces b5 and b, to the loweredges of which are secured braces O, whichproject inward through longitudinal slots o7, formed between shelf-door b4 and the horizontal edge oftheV recess, and terminate at their inner ends in downwardly-projecting lugs c. When shelf-door b4 is closed and the piecesb and b are swung inward, they lie flat against the face of the former and form in appearance an ornamental panel upon the front of the dresser, as seen in Fig. l. Inthis position brace C occupies the position shown in dotted lines, Fig. 4. When pieces b and h are swung outward, they are braced by lugs c, bearing against the inner face of front B, and when shelf-door b4 is swung down its ends bear against the inner faces of pieces b and b' and brace them apart and is itself'supported upon the brace C, as Yshown in Figs. 3 and 4. When Ioo Each of the sides of the mattress-frame consists of end pieces cl and cl' and a short cen-i between the two for the links to rotate. Adjacent to journal-bearings ZY5 and @ZG upon the inner face of the plate are studs d11d12, against which when the frame is folded lugs Z13 of each link bear to limit the rotation of the links, so that piece CZ is held in a position substantially parallel to piece d, leaving space between them for the mattress and head-rest, (not shown,) and against which when the frame is unfolded lugs CZ14 of the links bear to hold the pieces of the frame in alinement. To the adjacent ends of pieces Z' and Z3 are secured links Z15 and 116, which are pivoted together, so that the head-rest may turn over and rest inverted upon piece Z in the folded position of the mattress. In the open position the head-rest is held inclined by its ends abutting against the inclined end of piece d1?, which is secured orformed integral with piece Z of the frame.

Pieces Z of the frame have ways d18 in their ends to receive pins C012, which project out from sides a c of the case at a distance above the base-board equal tohalf the depth of the frame, so that when swung down it rests flat upon the front piece B. The mattress is to be supported within the frame upon crossbars d1, which connect the sides of the frameV together, and the head-rest is to be supported4 upon the cross-bars d20, which connect the sides of the head-rest frame. Vhen the device is to be changed from bed to dresser, the mattress and head-rest remaining in their respective frames, pieces Z3 and d' are folded over so as to rest upon CZ, vas shown in dotted lines, Fig. 6. The whole mattress-frame thus folded is then rotated about pins L12 to the position shown in Fig. 2. Front piece B is then swung upward and hooked in position, as shown in Fig. 2. Shelf-door is then closed and caught in place by a spring-latch 127. Pieces b5 and ZJ( are then swung inward, and the whole assumes the form and appearance of the dresser shown in Fig. l.

What I claim is- 1. In a combined dresser and bed a ease consisting of side pieces a dresser-top supported upon the side pieces and a base-board connecting the side pieces, pivots upon the interior of the sides, a front piece hinged to the top edge of the base-board so thatit may be swung to a vertical position to close the front of the case and to a horizontal position to form the support for a mattress-frame, a piece hinged near each side of the front piece near its top edge so that they may be swung inward to forxn ornamental panels when the front piece is closed and outward to form legs to support the front piece in its horizontal position, and a mattress-frame swinging upon the pivots in the sides of the case so that in its lowered position it rests upon the front piece and composed of separate pieces hinged together so as to be folded up to swing into the case, substantially as shown and described.

2. In a combined dresser and bed, a case consisting of side pieces, a dresser-top supported upon the side pieces and abase-board connecting the side pieces, pins or pivots upon the interior of the sides, a front piece hinged to the top edge of the base-board to be swung to a vertical position to close the front of the case and to a horizontal position to form the support for a mattress-frame and having arecessinitsnpperedge,ashelf-doorhingedtothe horizontal edge of the recess so as when closed to lie iiush with front piece, a piece hinged to each of the other two edges of the recess so as to lie flat against the shelf-door in the closed position, in the open position to be braced apart by the shelf-loer and in the horizontal position of the front piece to act as legs to support it, and a mattress-frame swinging upon the pivots in the sides of the ease so as in its lowered position to rest upon the front piece and composed of separate pieces hinged together so as to be folded together to swing into the case, substantially as shown and described.

3. In a combined dresser and bed the case consisting of side pieces, a dresser-top upon top of the side pieces, a base-board connecting them and beneath the dresser-top a vertical back piece and a horizontal partition forming a stationary compartment, pivots upon the interior of the sides, a front piece hinged to the base-board to close the front of the case when in a vertical position and to support a mattress-frame when in a horizontal position and having a recess in its upper edge, a shelf-door hinged to the longitudinal edge of the recess so as to lie flush with the front piece when closed, a piece hinged to each of the other two edges of the recess so as to lie flat against the shelf -door when closed and to be braced apart by the shelfdoorv when it is swung down to act as legs to support the front piece in its horizontal position, and a mattress-frame rotatable upon the pivots to rest upon the front piece when horizontal and hinged so as to be folded up and swung into the case upon the pivots, substantially as shown and described.

4. In a combined dresser and bed the case consisting of the sides, the dresser-top supported thereon, and the base-board connecting them, a compartment beneath the dressertop, a front piece hinged to the base-board to be swung to a vertical position to close the case and to a horizontal position to support a mattress-frame and having a recess in its upper edge, a shelf-door hinged to the lon gtudinal edge of the recess to be iiush with the front.
