THOMAS BAMFORD, OF ST. JOSEPILlVIISSOURI.
DRESS AND SKIRT ADJUSTER.
SPECIFICATION tormingpart of Letters Patent No. 693,361, dated February 18, 1902. Application filed August 17, 1900. Serial No. 27,225- (No model.)
To atZZ whom it may concern:
' Be it known that I, THOMAS BAMFORD, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Joseph, in the county of Buchanan and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dress and Skirt Adjusters; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exactdescription of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this description.
This invention relates to dress and skirt adjusters; and it consists in the construction and arrangement of parts, which will be more fully hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a rear elevation of a figure, showing the improved device applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of a figure with the improved device thereon. Fig. 3 shows detail elevations of parts of the improved device. tion, partially broken away, of another part of the device.
Similar numerals of reference are employed to indicate corresponding parts in the several views. 7.
The numeral 1 designates suitable lengths of fine coiled spring-wire, two of these lengths being used and each having a covering means 2, of silk or cotton fabric or the like, secured to the outer portions of the coils of the wire, the said coils having a clear unobstructed opening therethrough in a longitudinal direction. These covered wire coils form resilient shoulder-bearing members of tubular construction, and to hold them in proper spaced relation they are connected at the front bya cross-strap 3, and at the back said members are drawn together and secured, as at 4. By thus connecting the front and rear portions of the members they will be held in proper applied position over the shoulders Fig. 4 is a detail elevawithout annoyance or discomfort. Movably extending through the members are silk, linen, or cotton cords 5, having terminal pull-buttons 6 at the front, which prevent the cords from being drawn through the members and also serve as means for operating the said cords. At the rear the said cords are each formed with a pair of branched terminals 7, having skirt-engaging attachments 8 on the ends thereof, so as to permit a greater width of the skirt to be operated by the improved device. In applying the device it is arranged asshown and the cords connected to the skirt at therear through the medium of the attachments 8. By pulling the front extremities'of the cords 5 the skirt will be regularly raised at the rear, and by releasing the said front extremities the skirt will be free to assume its normal position. These operations can be quickly carried on by the wearer of the device while walking, and it will be seen that the skirt does not have to be specially formed to receive the parts of the improved adjuster.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is A skirt-adj uster comprising resilient lengths of coiled wire having covering means and con nected at the front and rear for application over the shoulders of the wearer, the said lengths extending from the shoulders below the waist-line at the rear, and cords freely slidable through the said lengths of covered wire and each formed with rear attaching branches, having terminal attaching devices, the front ends of the cords having pull devices thereon and normally located within easy reaching distance.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
THOMAS BAMFORD. Witnesses:
WILLIAM C. GoW, H. S. SMITH.
