TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, JAMES W. TRUMAN, ot' Macon, in the county of Bibb, and State of Georgia, have invented a new and improved Cotton-Bale '.lie or Hoop-Lock; and' that the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, hereinafter referred to, forms a fnll and exact specification of the same, wherein I have set forth the nature and principles of my said improvements, by which my invention may be distinguished-from all others of a similar class, togetherwith such parts as I claim, and desire to have secured to me by Letters Patent.
This invention relates to a new and improved tic or lock i`or connecting together and securing the ends of metallic hoops for cotton-bales.
The invention consists in constructing the tic or lock of a. single piece of wire or rod bent or swaged in the form of a quadrangle or square, the ends of which, comprising one side of the square, extend entirely across the whole width of the device, said ends being disconnected, but forming a side composed of two thicknesses of the wire, whereby a tie or lock is obtained which may be very readily lapplied to the hoops, and which will fo'rm a very strong and secure fastening. In the accompanying sheet of drawings- Figure l is an outer or face view of the tie or lock tted to the ends -of a hoop, and securing the same together.
Figure .7., an edge view of the same.
Figure 3,' a detached perspective view of the saine.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
A represents the tie or lock, constructed of a single piece of wire or rod bent in quadrilatcral or square form, the ends (t a of the wire or rod, which compose one sideof the same, extending the whole width of the device, and forming a side of double thickness, as shown clearly in tig. 3. These ends a a are not connected, as it is necessary that the loops at the end of`the`hoop be allowed to pass between them in order that they may be adjusted in the loop at one end of the hoop, and the opposite side b adjustedin the loop at the other end of the hoop, as shown in lig. 2. The hoop B has a loop, c, formed on each end of it, and the tie or lock is fitted in a loop at one end of the hoop before thc latter is applied to the bale, the side b being adjusted in said loop.
When the bale is fully compressed the loop is formed on the opposite end or" the hoop, and said loop passes between the ends (L a, the tie -or lock being turned to admit of both ends being itted in the loop. On relieving vthe bale of pressure the material expands, so that the hoop willrlbe tight on thc bale. The tie or lock is prevented froni spreading laterally on account of the ends of rl. a termina-ting in hook projections (l d, shown clearly in fig. 3, the loop c fitting between these projections.
I would remark that the wire or rod of which the tie or lock is formed should b e of cylindrical form at least that would be the preferable shape, as it it would not be lia-ble to cut the loops of the hoop, as would be the ease if it were of rectangular shape.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The flexible tie A, constructed as described, its ends a ft extending the entire width of one side, overlapping eachother, and forming a side of double thickness, their points d turned at right angles with the sides a, the latter adapted to be pressed together by the strap B, as herein shown and described, for the purpose specified.
' JAMES W. TRUMAN.
