UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
RUDOLPH HERRLING, OF GREENBUSH, WISCONSIN.
PLOW.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent NO. 691,464, dated January 21, 1902. Application filed October 3, 1901. Serial No. 77,351. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RUDOLPH HERRLING, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Greenbush, in the county of Sheboygan and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Flows; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention has for its object to lessen resistance to draft and facilitate turning of plows, said invention consisting in aplow provided with a traction-wheel arranged between landside and moldboard to depend somewhat below the same and in provision for varying elevation of the wheel, automatic removal of moist earth from its periphery, and protection of said wheel from falling clods or dirt, all as herein particularly set forth with reference to the accompanying drawings and subsequently claimed.
Figure 1 of the drawings represents a partly-sectional elevation of a portion of an ordinary hand-plow provided with an adj ustable traction-wheel in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2, a vertical transverse sectional view indicated by lines 2 2 in the first figure, and Fig. 3 a plan view in section on the plane indicated by line 3 3 in said first figure.
Referring by letter to the drawings, A indicates the beam, B the landside, O the moldboard, D the point, and E each of the handles, of an ordinary hand-plow. By means of pivot-bolts F hangers G are connected intermediate of their ends to the plow-handles, and curved slots in the upper ends of the hangers are engaged by set-bolts H, extending into said handles.
Journaled in the lower ends of hangers G is a traction-wheel I, that is preferably at an angle to the landside of the plow to prevent crowding in the furrows. The wheel is arranged to depend below the lower edges of the landside and moldboard of the plow, its elevation being variable at will by pivotal adjustment of its hangers.
A scraper J is arranged on one of the hangers G' to remove moist earth that may adhere to the periphery of the wheel, and a guardin the form of a housing K is shown in connection with one of the plow-handles over said Wheel to prevent falling clods or dirt from interfering with the same.
The weight of the plow coming upon wheel I in a furrow, resistance to draft is lessened, and turning of said plow is facilitated by the employment of said wheel as a pivot.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A plow, hangers pivotally connectedintermediate of their ends to the plow-handles, set-bolts extending through upper curved slots of the hangers into said handles, and a traction-wheel journaled in the lower ends of said hangers.
2. A plow, hangers in pivotally-adj ustable connection with the plow-handles, a tractionwheel journaled in the lower ends of the hangers, and a wheel-scraper on one of said 7 hangers.
3. A plow, hangers in connection with the plow-handles, a traction-wheel journaled in the lower ends of the hangers, a wheel-scraper on one of the hangers, and a Wheel-housing on one. of said handles.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand, at Greenbush, in the county of Sheboygan and State of Wisconsin, in the presence of two witnesses.
RUDOLPH HERRLING.
