Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 55,256, dated June 5, 1866.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EDWARD L; DoRsEY, of Union, Pike county, and State of Indiana, haveinvented certain new an d useful Improvements in Field and Garden Cultivators; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.

A represents the horizontal plow-beam, which is made of substantial timber, and simi- .lar to the ones in common use. At the rear end of this beam is a crooked upright, B, which is firmly attached to the beam A and secured. by a metallic brace, D.

0 represents the plow-handles, which are made in the form shown, and pivoted to the beam A, as seen at f. These handles are connected by a cross-bar, (not shown,) which is held to the upright 13 by a button, at, working in a slot in said upright, and allows the handles 0 to readily be elevated or lowered by the pivot f.

K represents the axle-tree, which has a wheel, L, at each end, and is secured to a metallic plate, H. This metallic plate is made somewhat in the hasp form, and has two oblong slots, y y, upon each end, where it is secured to the lower portion of the upright B, and by means of said slots and screws adjusts the axle-tree.

It will be seen that the aforesaid axle is set from the upright in oblique direction to the rear, the purposes of which will be hereinafter set forth. The axle K is provided with a series ofslots, through which pass the small shovels m, and has a metallic plate upon its rear side and bent over the wheels, forming scrapers or cleaners s s, to preventthe mud from adhering to the wheels.

t are set-screws which pass through the band and axle K, for the purpose of holding the shovels min the desired position. These shovels can be taken from without the slots in the axle and reversed, for the purpose of raking or harrowing the ground, instead of plowing, said shovels being made pointed at the upper ends, as shown at n, for that purpose.

It represents an adjustable block, which is secured by means of a screw to the lower end of the upright B, and set in a horizontal position. This block has two oblong'slots, a a, and four grooves, 00 w w w. Upon the face of this block is secured two adjustable shovels, P, which are provided with strips on their under side to fit into the grooves 00 on the block. These shovels can be placed close or near together by means of the slots in the block B, or can be raised or lowered from the ground by slots in said shovels. Attached to the rear of the upright B, and secured by setscrews 0 0, is a large shovel, M, which sits in the rear of the shovels P, and is also provided with a slot to adjust it to suit the plowing reqnired.

F is the guide-wheel, which is secured under the front end of the plow-beam A, and attached by means of an adjustable band, G. Directly in the rear of this wheel is a scraper, f, to prevent the ground from adhering to said wheel. I

Upon the plow-beam A, and, extending between the handles O, is a rod, E, which has a curved block, g, at the end, and is secured to a plate, a, on the beam A. This rod is to allow the person operating the cultivator to press his breast against the block 9 to keep the plows in the ground and the guide-wheel F above or below the earth.

Upon the axle K and each side of the plate 11 is a guide-mark, w, (in dotted lines,) which is bent so as to extend over and outside of the wheels L, and mark the ground passed over, so that when the furrow is crossed to lay out the ground for planting these guides indicate the squares or points for dropping the seed.

It will be seen that the block R, with the shovels P, can be taken off whenever desired, as also can the shovel M and small shovel or rakes m n,- or either of them can be adjusted to suit the depth the ground is desired to be plowed or cultivated, while the axle and wheels can be secured nearer or farther from the upright by the adjustable plate H.

The handles 0 can be lowered or raised to suit the o aerator and the rod E slidin in a 1 7 3 slot, h, can be made to accommodate to operation.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
