NASAL DISTENDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 690,527, dated January '7, 1902.
Application filed April 9, 1901. Serial No. 55,050. (No model.)
To aZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM MOORES, a citizen of the United States, residing in the borough of Manhattan, in the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Nasal Distenders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a device intended to expand the nostril for the introduction of semisolids or fluids in connection with the use of spray or collapsible tubes; and my invention is based on the theory that in many cases,-
either as a result of diseased nasal muscles or because of their disuse, the muscular action in the nasal wings is very much lessened,leaving the nostrils liable to collapse, thereby preventing a free passage of spray or other medicament to the interior.
The object of the invention is to produce a simple, delicate, and inexpensive device which may be applied as a tip to sprays and collapsible tubes or the like and which when in use will not only insure perfect access of medication to the membranes of the nose, but will also act as a means of curative massage to weakened nasal muscles.
The device is sov constructed that it will obviate the necessity of using a nasal speculum in the application of medication to the nostrils by sprays and medicament used with collapsible tubes. 7
To this end myinvention consists of a nasal tip simply made of suitable material and which can be screwed or otherwise secured or attached to spray-nozzles or collapsible tubes at their points of discharge.
In the drawings accompanying this appli cation, Figure l is a front View of the device. Fig. 2 is a side view thereof. Fig. 3 is arear view. Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken on the line 4 4 of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a similar View to Fig. 4, but showing the collar portion of the device threaded to permit its screw attachment upon a collapsible tube or the like. Fig. 6 is a plan view showing the opening for the outlet of spray or medicament. Fig. 7 is a view of a collapsible tube with my improved device fitted thereupon as a tip; and Fig. 8 is a partial outline view of a human nose, showing my device in operation as a distender.
In said figures, A indicates a collar portion arranged to fit as a tip upon a spray-nozzle,
collapsible tube, or the like, said collar being in some instances threaded, as seen in Fig. 5 at a, to permit it to screw upon the spray or tube nozzle. Extending upwardly from said collar A are a pair of wings B B, which wings are of substantially concavo-convex sectionthat is to say, said wings are curved at their outer surface to permit them to lie snugly against the inner surface of the outer wall of the nostril, so that by a slight pressure of the wings against the nostril-wall it may be perfectly distended, and thereby a passage opened in the nostril for the reception of the spray or other medicament. The space 0 existing between the wings B B is provided to permit the application therethrough of medication to the portion of the nostril-wall that is thereby exposed and for the purposes of massage. Said space 0 also more thoroughly causes the exposure of the anterior tip of the inferior turbinated bone to the medicament being applied.
Having now described my invention, I declare that what I claim isl. A combined discharge-tip and nasal distender for adjustment upon collapsible tubes and spray devices intended for the application of medication to the interior of the nostril, the same comprising a collar portion, having a pair of curved wings projecting from its perimeter at one side thereof.
2. A removable tip for nasal spray devices and collapsible tubes, the same comprising a collar portion arranged to fit upon a discharge-nozzle, and said collar having a pair of wings extending forwardly at one side thereof, and arranged to distend the nostril while inserting medication. 7
3. A nose-distending tip for discharge-nozzles, comprising a collar-adjustment portion, and a pair of curved wings extending at one side therefrom, said wings having an intermediate space between them for the purposes set forth.
