B'AIT- GUN.
(Application filed Aug, 8, 1901.)

UNITED STATES 1 OLIVER JAMES DE ROSI-IEY, OF IRON MOUNTAIN, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO. DAVID GILBERT, OF AMASA, MICHIGAN.
SAIT-GUN.
SPECIFIGATXON forming part of Letters Patent No. 690,244, dated December 31, 1901.
Application filed August 8, 1901.I
T0 @ZZ whom, it wmp concern: Y
Be it known that I, OLIVER JAMES' DE Ro- SHEY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Iron Mountain, in the county of Dickinson and State of Michigan, have invented a new and Improved Bait-Gun, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to an improvement in bait-guns, especially a gun adapted for the execution of Wolves or like animals.
A further purpose of the invention is to so construct the gun that a cartridge may be expeditiouslyand conveniently placed in a barrel and held in position therein by means of a breech-block carrying a needle.
A special feature of the invention is the construction of the barrel of the gun with an integral breech extension, which is bored 1ongitudinally and provided with a lengthwise slot and a recess adjacent to the cartridgechamber or breech, as hereinafter described.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a perspective View of the improved device set for action. Fig. 2 is a plan View of the improved device drawn on a larger scale. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the improved device. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal vertical section through the device, and Fig. 5 is a transverse section taken practically on the line 5 5 of Fig. 4.
A represents a barrel adapted to carry a cartridge, and B a breech extension of the barrel. This breech extension Where it connects with the barrel is provided with a chamber 10, open at the top, but normally closed by a cover 12, attached to the breech-block 11, which breech-block has a hinge connection With the breech extension and the barrel at one side of the device, as is best shown in Fig. 5. The cover 12, carried by the breechblock 11, extends to an offset 13 at the top of the breech extension, between the forward and rear ends of the said extension, and back sedano. rrete. (No model.)
of the offset 13 the breech extension is closed, with the exception of a longitudinal slot 14.
A hammer 15, which is in the nature of a bar, is held to slide in the breech extension of the device, and this hammer at its forward end is provided with a recess 16 at one side. The hammer 15 is likewise provided with a handle 17, Which extends up through the slot 14, and at the rear of the hammer 15 a spring 6o 1S is located in the breech extension, having bearing against the rear end of the hammer and against a cap 19, Which is screwed upon or otherwise secured to the rear of the breech extensiomand this cap 19 is provided with 65 an eye 20, adapted to receive a chain 21 or the like, whereby the device may be attached to a tree or other support, as illustrated in Fig. 1.
A slot 22 is longitudinally made in one side 7o of the breech extension leading into the chamber 10, as is illustrated in Fig. 3, and Withinv this slot 22 an angle-lever 23 is fulcrumedat the junction of its members, and one end of this lever is adapted to engage with the recessed portion 16 of the hammer 15 to hold the said hammer back against the tension of its spring 18. The end of the lever 23 which extends out beyond the side of the device is preferably provided with a series of aper- 8o tures, and a link 25 is attached to the lever 23 at any one of the apertures, according to the quickness With which it is desired that the lever shall be released from the hammer 15. This link 25 is connected With a bait- 85 holder 27, usually made in the shape of hooks extending up at the muzzle portion of the device, as is shown in Fig. 1, and the hooks preferably form portions of strands 26, which 'have guided movement on the outside of the 9o barrel A and are attached to the link 25, so that as soon as the bait is taken and an effort is made to remove it the bait-holder will be drawn downward and the lever 23 will be released from the hammer 15, which Will be shot forward by its spring 18 to an engagement with a firing-pin 29, located in the breech-block 11 and controlled bya spring 30, the ring-pin being prevented from leaving the breech-block by a suitable pin 31 or its roo equivalent, as shown in Fig. 4.
A cartridge 28 is readily placed in the barrel, as shown in Fig. 4, when the breechblock 1l is opened out to the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 5, therebyexposing the chamber l0,into which the cartridge is placed before it is introduced into the barrel.
The breech-block is held closed through the medium ofa latch 32, pivoted to one side of the breech extension and engaging with a pin 33 on the breech-block. The device is very simple and effective, and the hammer is released practically as soon as the bait is touched, said hammer immediately exploding the cartridge, and the animal in front of the muzzle receiving the charge.
The device is set by carrying the hammer l5 rearward through the medium of its handle 17 and causing the inner end of the triplever 23 to engage withthe for-ward end of the hammer.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The improved bait-gun comprisinga barrel, having a breech extension formed integrally therewith and provided with a longitudinal bore having a lengthwise side slot, and achamber which is arranged between the aforesaid chamber, means for securing the.
same closed, an elbow-lever pivoted in a slot in the breech extension and adapted to engage the hammer, and a sliding bait-carrier connected withthe outer arm of said lever, as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
QLIVER JAMES DE ROSHEY.
