. t To ALL WHOM 1T MAY looNeERN':
Be it known that I, NATHAN HUNT, of Salem, in the county of Columbiana, and State oiOhio,` hnive invented a new and useful Improvement in Pistons;- a .nd I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear,
and exact` description thereof, which will enable those skilled in' the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of'this specification. v
AThis invention relates to a new and improved rnethod of constructing the pistons of steam-engine cylinders,
expanded by the press-ure of the steam, as willbe hereinafter more fully described. 4
Figure' i represents aaertical central section of the piston, it bei@ through the line zx of fig. 2. 'Figure 2 is a horizontal section of the same through the line lr/.y of fig. 1. Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts. i A is the piston-head, which is rigidly attached to.' the piston-rod. B is the p'istonnod. C is the vfollower,
and it consists in 'making ,the piston self-packing by means of rings of peculiar constructionfind which are f which is slipped on/to the lower end of the piston-rod, and fastened with a screw-nut, a, .as seen. Therouxe four packing-rings, two outside andftwo inside. Theroutside rings are marked D, and the inside rings are marked E.
The rings D are l -shaped,l as seen in the drawing, and meet and form ajoiat in the centre ofthe piston, their outer surfaces forming. the entirewearing surface against the cylinder. TheV inner surfaces (or short part ofthe L,) enter the chamber` or groove formed between the piston-head A and the follower C. The'insidc rings VE are square in their cross-section, and occupy the interior portion ofthe chamber, being eoloredblue in the drawing. The piston-head A and the follower C are tted and screwed together tightly, and the rings are fitted into the chamber, so that they are allowed to 'expand freely. i
It will be noticed that the peripherics of the piston-head and the follower are bevellcd, so as to leave an annular space, e, inside the rings' D. lhc steam enters this annular space freely, -and expands the riugson the upper and lower sides of the piston alternately, as it is moved up and down or back and forth in the cylinder.
All the rings (D and E) iu one ormore places are cut, as seen in g.,2, at ff, and the pieces :ire arranged to break' joints. The annular steam space e is made of a depth to correspond with the diameter 'of the piston, or as experiencernight prove' to be best. The advantages of this piston over those iu'ordinary useare many, and must be obvious to all who are acquainted with the subject.
What I claim as-new, and desire to secure by'Letters Patent,y is 4 The construction and arrangement of the L-shaped packing-ringsl),*whose inner projections rest against each other, and are inserted "in the space betweenthe piston-head A and follower C, holding the packingirings E in position, said piston-head and follower provided with inclined recesses e upon their peripherie s, to admit the steambehind the rings B and E alternatelat each upward and downward stroke of the piston, as herein shown and described.
