LUTHER W. CAMPBELL, OF AURORA, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF, A. T. HALL, C. F. ALLEN', AND A. J. AMBLER.
Letters .Patent No. 70,522, dated November 5, 1867.
IMPROVEMENT IN PISTON-PACKING.
TO .ALL WI-IOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, LUTHER W. CAMPBELL, of Aurora,.in the county of Kane, and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Elastic Metallic Packing for the Piston-Heads of Steam Engines; and I do hereby declare that thc following is a full, clear., and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making part of this specification, in which- Figure 1. is a side elevation.
Figure 2, a vertical longitudinal section.
Figure 3 is a plan, and l Figure 4 is a vertical transverse section.
The same letters in all the figures indicate parts which are identical.
This improvement is in the arrangement of adoublc conical central ring around a fixed hub upon the piston-rod, around which is placed a series of concentric rings, so adjusted that the packingrings upon each end of the piston-headsllall be alternately expanded by the pressure of the steam, as it is received into the opposite ends of the cylinder, acting against rings with inclined faces; and thenature of my invention will appear from the following description and claims.
In the drawings, A is a central hub, attached to and forming partei' the head I3, both of them being rigidly attached to the piston-rod C. The head B is attached to the hub by bolts D entering the radial arms at D. On the radial arms of the central hub is placed a ring, E, constructed with a central flange, El, projecting from its periphery, the ring being cut away in both directions from the base of the flange on the periphery, so as to form the double conical faces shown at E2 in fig; 2. Around the ring E, on each side of the central flange E, are elastic rings F, the inner faces of which are inclined, to correspond with thc inclined faces E2, and the exterior faces are parallel with the bore of the cylinder. Around the rings F are thin rings G, used for thevpurposc of breaking joints, so as to prevent the steam from passing through the rings, which are cut so as to give them expansibility. Around the rings G are twovrings H H, which, bearing against the inner surface of the cylinder, form an' elastic metallic packing for the piston-head. l
Recesses are cut in thehcads B and B', to receive the edge of therings F, and into these recesses a. series of holes, J J, is bored through the heads, to permit the steam to enter, which, as it is admitted alternately to the two ends of the cylinder, pressing against the'edges of the rings Ffwill force them on to the faces E2 of the ring E, thus expanding them, and pressing them outwardly, so as to force the packing-rings against the cylinder.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. So arranging a double series of concentric elastic rings, I", G, and II, that, acting in combination with the central ring E, having4 double inclined faces E2, they may, by the pressure of the steam, alternately admitted to the opposite ends of the cylinder, be alternately expanded, substantially in the manner and for the purpose set forth. p
2. The combination of the hub A, perforated plates-B B', ring E, having a central flange, El, and double inclined faces E2, and the concentric rings I'I, G, and F, constructed and arranged to operate substantially as set forth. i
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence-of two subscribing witnesses.
